Need help: wiring my truck for trailer

Need help: wiring my truck for trailer - 01/31/09 07:16 PM

I'm wiring my truck (92 Dakota) for pulling a trailer. I won't be using trailer brakes because it's just a small utility trailer.
I've got a 6 way plug that I'm using. I've found a wiring diagram online, but I'm confused about a couple things. The truck previously had a plug wired in, but was removed at some point. All the spliced in wires are still there though.
I've got three wires on the truck.
Wire 1 is hot when: left turn, headlight, brake
Wire 2 is hot when: right turn, brake
Wire 3 is never hot, but shows resistance. I'm assuming this is ground.
I'm confused because the wiring diagram I've got shows a separate wire for tail lights.
I'll keep googling, but any help is much appreciated. Thank you!

Okay, the wire I thought was ground is not. That may be my tail light wire, but the splice has gone bad. I'll get back with more info.

If those are the cheezy piggy back splices, you might want to remove and repair first, then do it right.

Simple:

1- Remove butchered harness.
2- Toss in garbage.
3- Get new harness and correct "T" connector for your application.
4- Track down previous pinhead cheapskate and slap upside head for ruining expensive harness.

You might also see if you have a friend that understands electrical systems that will give you a hand. As said there is plug and play harnesses available.

Glad to hear it. Hope it works out well for you, but remember to repair the butchery too.
