8 3/4 sure grip

I recently picked this 489 case.
The owner said it was a Detroit locker and he hated it because of the binding when parking.
Can anyone identify if it is a Detroit locker from my pictures or let me know how to tell.

Not a Detroit locker. It is a clutch type sure grip, used from 1958 - 1968. The clutches go in there in a specific order, outlined in the factory service manual. If not in the right order it will be to tight, snapping and binding on corners. This will break the spider gears if driven that way.

That is a clutch type (power-lock) sure-grip.

Looks like it has been apart. The owner is most likely running an incorrect (Dana 44) clutch pack or he did not add a bottle of friction modifier to the gear lube.

Was a clutch type sure grip ever used by the factory in a 489 case?

When the 489 was first introduced in late '68 I believe the clutch-type SG was used in it.

IMHO you lucked out as that is generally considered to be the cream of the limited slip crop for street cars that occasionally go to the dragstrip.

The blue color arc around the pin appears to be induction hardening of that area. Or is it heat transmitted through the pin? Enquiring minds want to know.

My mistake on the case number, I was working with three different axles this morning. It is a 742 case.

I will tear it apart and see if there is any obvious damage.
From what I have searched it looks like I could use this suregrip in a 489 case. Is that true? If so I could have the better suregrip with keeping my cars axle with the correct case numbers.

The owner did say that when he bought the car ,the seller said it was rebuilt. He said other than that he has no info.
If it looks OK inside I will be in touch for parts to rebuild it.

The heat signature around the V-ramps is due to induction hardening.

Dr Diff, what is the difference between the 8.75 Power Lok and Dana 44 Power Lok 30 spline rebuild kit? I thought that most of the internal parts were interchangeable between the two?

Pretty sure it's hardening , everyone I have seen looks like that .

OEM 8.75" Power-locks used an odd-ball thin plate on the end of the clutch pack. Dana 44 Power-locks used all thick plates.

Unless you have a specific reason for going with the 489 housing, I'd stick with the 742. No crush sleeve, or crush sleeve eliminator needed. Easier to set up IMO and less stuff to buy or replace.
