09 Ram Tire Wear

09 Ram Tire Wear - 01/28/16 09:49 PM

My son has an 09 Ram (4WD, Hemi,w/30" tires, after market rims). He's having trouble with tire wear on just the driver's side tire. He's gone through the alignment thing several times, had the suspension inspected, tires checked, wheels checked, etc.
Nothing found out of specs but the tire continues to wear. It wears only on one side (I can't remember if it's inside or outside). The other side of that same tire is fine and all the other tires are just fine. Any ideas?
I've heard that there is a suspension problem with some of the Rams but never have been able to pin the problem down.
Thanks

Dumb question but how much does he weigh?

Weak tie rods are the problem you heard of but that's on the straight axle trucks.

His weight may be a cause. I had a customer that weighed 500 lbs (no joke) I had to align his truck by chaining down the left front to get the "normal" ride height.

That said, many alignment techs don't know what caster and camber do. If they can't just turn a tie rod "it can't be fixed"

Got a printout of the specs?

He's only about 180. So I don't think weight is the problem. I've also heard of Ram trucks with 20" wheels wear the tires down VERY QUICKLY but I believe that's only on the newer ones from 2013/2014 on. His truck had 20" but he now has 30" or so. None of the other tires are wearing like that one.

You said aftermarket rims, but what about the tires? What brand are they? How many miles are on them?

Have you looked at the steering gear box and see if it is tight and the frame not cracked around the bolts?

What about the wheel hub being excessively worn?

what does the "worn" pattern look like ? edge down to nothing ? feathered ? cupped ? center bald ? both edges worn down ? pics would help a bunch.

Um, well anyway..............it's a pooched tire. Most likely a Goodyear or bridgestone/firestone. Take 'em all off and get some Michelins or Walmart tires on there.

Well if its only wearing one front tire its a chamber related issue to that tire which you said is the left front. Of course you have to make sure no parts are worn and the bearings are good so nothing can throw the chamber off driving down the road. Some guys will set the front end with the driver in the car if they want to compinsate for the drivers weight. Myself if there are no bad parts in the front end and all looks good I want want to see which edge of the tire is wearing and I would change the chamber a tad to make the tire wear less and see what that does. Good luck , Ron
