How to evaluate condition of used 4 speed - 01/29/09 06:17 PM

What should I be looking for on a used 4 speed to determine if it needs to be rebuilt or its good to go? If everything looks good are there any little things I should just do while its our of the car? Any tips would be great.

Thanks,

Steve

At the very least, pull the side cover off and have a look inside. It's tough to do a thorough check without pulling it apart, but look at the teeth of the gears for chips or if the teeth are missing. Look at the brass stop rings (slide the sliders over so you can see them) and make sure they are not obviously broken or cracked. Look at the clutching teeth on the gears. A magnifying glass might help. Make sure they are not broken, rounded off, etc. Make sure it shifts smooth. Check to make sure the interlock is working properly. Check for obvious leaks and cracks on the main case, cover and tail housing. Check for leaks at the input shaft bearing retainer (inner seal and gasket).

All about the internals. Rebuilding one of these isn't too bad either. I just did mine this past year. Like the other guy said just open the cover and move all the sliders and the input shaft. check for missin teeth or anything. If anything the sliders will be missing some. Passon Performance is where I got the new front and rear bearings along with the brass sliders. Call him and he should be able to tell you all you need to know. The bearing go out on these occasionally, but don't know offhand how to tell. Pull and push on input shaft to see if there is much play.

Drain the fluid out and see how much brass is in it , take off the side cover and look at the little teeth on the gears themself to see how ground up they are.

Pay attention to the side cover bolts , there is one of the shoulder bolts that has a shoulder that's longer than the rest , that one goes in a specific hole to locate the side cover .

Replace the gasket , probably be a good idea to change the others also , use the rear seal with the outer boot .
