Need Carburetor Help 66 Fury 383 with BBD - 12/19/15 03:00 AM

I'm trying to get my '66 Sport Fury convertible started after 19 years of sitting. The car started and drove until that time. . It cranks strongly and the ignition system is live when you turn the key. I wasn't getting gas into the carburetor so I took out the inlet valve and seat and they were clogged and stuck. Some Gumout cured that. There was still no gas coming through the carb so I'm assuming the carb needs a cleaning and rebuilding. The bowl did fill up with gas and was dripping out the inlet, probably because the fuel pump was pumping and the gas had no place to go after the bowl filled up. My friend is a tech and said he rebuild it, but I need to find a rebuild kit first. The engine is a 383 and the carb is a Carter BBD that may not be original to the car because there is no tag on it anymore. Can anyone suggest what carb kit to buy based on the pictures I attached?

The throttle cable has a weird bend in it (partially visible in picture)and I think the gas pedal doesn't have full travel. The fuel inlet line has a bend near the carb. These things make me believe the carburetor came from another year/model. The only markings I've found so far(besides the Carter name and address) is the number 6-1925 on the right front of the carb.

Also, is it possible to spray (and where to spray) or dunk the carb in one piece to loosen things up to avoid rebuilding it? Any ideas appreciated. Thanks for your help.

Harold

I would call your parts house & have them pull the # for the kit listed for a '66 383 carter BBD 2bbl & see the years it covers but I think the odds are that there is quite a spread there & that a kit for a '66 would cover your carb even if it ain't original (& I'm thinking that it is). You could just install the new needle/seat out of the kit (have the top off) & they interchange no matter what year) then recheck/set the float level as needed (might be 1/4" iirc), the white sheet (& your buddy) will help you. clean the carb base and the manifold base and a new base gasket (will be in the carb kit) & reinstall the carb/lines/hoses/linkage etc. I like to lube the top bowl screws that secure the top to the main carb body (actually any screws that go into aluminum). open the throttle all the way then spray the carb throat with starting fluid then shut the throttle & crank it. EDIT the needle/seat assy is brass so "reasonably" tight on that

The big differences over the years was the shape of the accelerator pump shaft/rod. If you can match that up, you will most likely be home free. When I was working parts counter, we had a carb guy down the road that was always bringing in odd carbs and parts in to match up. 99 % of the time, he left with something that would work.

That doesn't look like a BBD ? Looks more like a WWC Stromberg work

And it would be worth pulling it right apart and rebuilding it completely in my opinion if you are having any issues with it...that way you can blow out and clean out all of the passages, etc in it. Kits are pretty cheap and not hard to do!

Oz I think you are right. OP if you are sure there ain't no (good) number on it I'd still suggest askin what the parts house has to provide for a range of years of WWC apps for ~66 383's & other size engines in that range as needed. Yes it definitely would be better to soak it especially after all those years idle. Carb cleaner ain't stout like it used to be (EPA regs) but you can get a gallon & set the carb in a container & fill up the bowl & let it set so the fluid gets to all the innards & the cluster might fit in the carb bowl to make it even easier. I would not remove the jets

Thanks for your replies so far. I ordered a rebuild kit from Rock Auto (the last one they had, according to the listing) and will bring that and the carb to my friend.

Powerflow's carburetor is a Carter BBD, not a Stromberg WWC. The BBD came in two sizes: 1-1/4" venturi or 1-1/2" venturi. Small blocks used the BBD 1-1/4" and big blocks used the BBD 1-1/2". A 1966 383 would have been equipped with a Stromberg WWC. The 1966 361 was equipped with a BBD. Powerflow's carburetor is a 1968 or later unit because it has the hole in the throttle lever for a cruise control lost motion link.
