Can anybody tell me the best place to buy the B&M flexplate (102390) required to put a neutral balance 904 convertor behind a 360 LA engine? Jeg's, Summit, and Mancini are exactly the same price.

I prefer Summit for fast delivery time. Usually 3 days.

/\ must be rough on tranny's or just crap luck.

I put several passes on a jy 904 behind a stout 340.

try advanced auto parts, they will match the prices of summit, and should get it in a day also.

Has there been a consistant failure or are they just worn out? I only know of 1 person that can wear out a good 904 that fast and they're making around 600hp.

Original topic - Summit or Jegs for me, I like Mancini because they're all mopar but I don't order from them if I need the parts within the week.

Re: 360/904 - 01/29/09 03:36 AM

Been many changes over the years with the 904 style trans.

i have a 68 and an 87 in my shop. The 68 has a nice forged band, the 87 has a flimsy stamped steel band with the ears spot welded on. Guess what broke off?

Ran a 360 and 904 in my 72 Dart for years, that specific combo was stock in a 79 Cordoba, the donor for this swap. Dunno how the 79 904 was built like, never had to take it apart. So, yes a 904 can live behind a 360.

I was hoping to find someone to beat their prices.

I have a fresh A-999 behind a 450HP 390 Stroker and it works great..... Well, that is after the first trans had the input shaft snap in half
But I think there was a factory defect in the first shaft but I had everthing freshened and it works good with my rowdy little 390...... TBF

My 360 killed a few 904s and theres nothing special about my engine. So I got a 727 and havent had a problem ever since.

Re: 360/904 - 01/29/09 03:58 PM

If you use the stock pan on it, you WILL kill it. You MUST use a deep pan, otherwise it runs out of fluid on the 2-3 upshift, and kills the clutches. The 904 is an awesome trans, and I bracket raced them for 7 years. Only had to rebuild it twice in the first two weeks, put a deep pan on it, went the remainder of the 7 years without a single issue....You loose almost 1s in 1/4mile et with a 727 on a mild small block...

they're about the best price you're going to find....

FWIW, the lockup 904 in my '86 5th ave held up good behind my headered, comp XE262 cammed 360 until I botched a band adjustment and the spot-welded on tab on the 2nd gear band broke off.

Re: 360/904 - 01/29/09 05:20 PM

yea, they are well used, and I hammer them hard

I will try a deep pan on the one I am puting in now

I had every thing from pumps to bands to clutches go at one time or another

I think your right cause it seems to be the WOT 1-2 shift that takes its toll on them for me

then its keep adjusting the bands up till it no worky again

most seem to be the KD band, this last one started whinning and is preety loud, stops when its in park

drove it 40 miles after sitting allday and nothing...then another few miles it starts the whinning..let it sit awhile and it is quit for a mile or 2.....sounds like the pump on this one

I just picked up another A999 out of an 87 dippy that has been rebuilt not long ago...so the jy said

they are poop IMO and they are not working for me

I am looking for a 727...anyone got a good one?

but good luck with yours

I guess I was lucky then. I ran a 904 in my drag car with a 360 for three years before I stopped racing and never had a problem. I rebuilt the trans myself using a Trans-Go TF-2 kit and installed a new "manual valve" so the convertor would "FILL" in park. I used the stock pan too.

The first two years I was running 13.80's with 3.23 gears and drag radials. The last year I raced I switched to 4.10's, a spool and 29X10.5 slicks and ran 12.70's.

I've been running a 904 behind my nitrous huffing Slant for years and never hurt anything. 3250# car, launching at 3800 on a brake, w/3.91 gears. 12:00@110.

Warmed 340 in an Ebody with 904 for 15 years and I beat it. Still performs great.

it may just be that you have old worn out junkyard transmissions, next one you get, rebuild it properly using good quality parts (i have used transtar kits), a workshopmanual a few nights being carefull so its all right and a Transo TF2 shiftkit and you will have a very nice shifting 904īthat will last along time as long as you dont do something stupid or just make way to much power
my 904 holds up just fine behind a pretty strong running solidrollercamed highcompression 340 in a duster

Re: 360/904 - 01/31/09 04:02 AM

I've got over 250 passes on my 904 behind a 360. The car runs in the 11's. Never had a problem. I changed the fluid once when I put a new converter in it, otherwise I never touched it.

We even got TBF's 904 up & flying after he snapped the input shaft.

Re: 360/904 - 01/31/09 01:45 PM

I am using an early 904 with front and rear pumps and cable shift. Don't know if the input is a weak link or not. I believe that I will get the deep pan and pickup though. Going to pick up the 360 tomorrow. I put a lot of dollars into the 273 and I am not happy at all. Experts all predicted that. Live and learn I guess.
