Paint Shop Mixed the Wrong Color...Kinda - Lemon Twist

Paint Shop Mixed the Wrong Color...Kinda - Lemon Twist - 12/02/15 11:32 PM

My car is an original FY1 Lemon Twist car but has been painted a time or two. I had a quart of paint mixed up to use with a tintable interior coating and ended up with a different yellow than I expected. I could use some input from those that deal with paint shops more frequently than I do.

I went in and asked for "FY1 Lemon Twist". His computer didn't pop up with it, so he pulled out the book for 1972 Plymouth/Dodge colors and pointed to "Y1 - Top Banana/Lemon Twist". I told him that is the color I wanted.

Naturally I didn't ask him to pop the cap before leaving and he didn't offer to show me the color otherwise I would have questioned it then. The label does show "Y1", but calls it Jasmine Yellow.

What I have come to find out is they are both PPG "Y1" but Jasmine Yellow is OEM code DT2587 and Lemon Twist is OEM code DT2469. As per this reference:

Do I have a leg to stand on? Do paint shops typically fix their mistakes like this? I feel like he went back to the machine, typed in "Y1" and hit GO. Not looking at the actual name, year or OEM code.

The color vs my decklid [which should be Lemon Twist]

Take the paint back with your information and car and have him fix it thumbs twocentsThe worst thing he can do is make it wrong again or tell you that he won't do that work scope

Pretty much cut and dry...

You need 2469...

That's not what you got...

(Time to 'cross-reference'..)

diplomacy tact stacking the odds in your favor. I would call the shop & ask to speak with the owner. when he gets on the line I would ask for an appt time or a good time for you to come in speak with him regarding a custome service paint issue & give your name/ph & give as little info as you can just enough to inform him that there is a customer issue regarding your service. He will for sure then do some legwork on his own to find out who you are who painted it & what happened. show up & speak him firmly calmly giving him the details & ask how (we) may resolve this letting him volunteer a resolution (for a start & hopefully he does). appropriate silence/timing is key. you want subtle pressure on HIM to come up with a solution to THEIR mistake. Keep the conversation on an adult level rather than emotional accusations & #1 do as LITTLE talking as possible. give him (& his shop) the opportunity to resolve it as the fault may be theirs (I'm assuming it is). You're an actor in a Shakespearean play and you have a part to play. Good luck & post how it turns out (& the gory details!). Know that most shops/businesses are out to seperate the customer from as much money as easily and painlessly as their can & some even have a statistic on how many comebacks they expect to deal with in a fiscal year which will affect their profit (& affect their reputation) which rep affects their profit which is the bottom line. Good Luck! Be firm be strong be smart

After I posted this I decided it'd be best to just try to get back to the shop before they closed and either forgot the conversation or I ended up dealing with someone else.

I brought the link I posted and they were pretty prompt to swap me out.

Before you spray it dip your finger in the can and put a small dab of it over top of the color your trying to match and let it dry to see if it's correct. PPG revised the yellow toners in their paints the last few years and just because the number on the can is what you need doesn't mean your getting the same color as what they were selling several years ago, or the same color that's already on the car.

Had about 1/3 of my car painted and then ran into body shop issues. FF a few years and I buy another can of the same PPG paint to finish it and discover the "new" paint with different yellow toners is a few shades off from the first can. Took me weeks worth of back and forth doing test spray outs and tinting tweaks to get the new can to match the 2007 can.

Thanks, but there won't be much "matching", the car will be a total repaint. The paint purchased today will be for the interior/trunk, so it just has to be reasonably matched to the exterior. For me at least.

Make sure you tell everybody you know, where this shop is and what a stand up operation they run.

Yep, no gripes here. I've used them a handful of times in the past as well.

Here's one I have recently had in my driveway wearing very accurate FY1 paint. Keep in mind that pictures and lighting can vary the appearance of yellow quite dramatically, this shot shows the color pretty accurately

Have to agree that looks pretty dead on for FY1 - was it done in single stage?
