California Legal Mods for a 2014 Pentastar V6 - 11/30/15 09:27 PM

A friend of mine has a 2014 Chrysler 300 with the 3.6 Pentastar.

Since we live in the Great Environmental State of California we can allow do changes that are approved by the evil empire of CARB.

What recommended mods can he do? Suggestions?

Cold air intake? Cat back?

And will cat-back or "cold air" make a difference?

Absolutely not, especially the "cold air". twocents

That's what I told him. That he probably would not notice the difference.

It will sound faster, thats about it. The factory don't leave as much HP on the table for easy pickins any more. Combine those with a tuner and you might get 10 HP and you would have to squint real hard to see a change on a time slip.

I have a 2012 Rallye Redline. I put the Mopar cold air intake on it. I doubt there is a measurable difference in performance but she really moans when you get on it...lol..

The mufflers on mine look like old school glasspacks. I don't know if they are baffled or not but they would have to be straight through. And the pipe is fairly large. I'd guess the restriction in the exhaust would be the resonators but removing them will cause a drone inside the car. I may replace mine with some shorty Cherry Bombs sometime just to see what it sounds like.

Tidlewave and another company are now making superchargers for the 3.6.

I did a bunch of research on what to do if anything on my car and decided most of the work is a waste of time.

The supercharger is steep bucks, for the money I'd invest in a hemi car instead.

Well, you tried and that's the best you can do. If he/she wants to dump $1500 for nothing, oh well.

Really, all that's left on a modern vehicle to make a noticable difference is to cut the catalytic converter out. It worked for me, but wow, is it tough to outsmart the downstream O2.

Otherwise, electric fans, efficient transmissions, great cylinder heads, precise timing, injection, cold air from inside the fender, it's all been done for you. Read that in Hot Rod in the mid 90's and they were sure right.

I was watching one of those car hot rod shows on Spike where they took the factory air intake out and replaced it with an Livernois "cold air" intake.

The factory system they removed had ductwork to get air from in front of the radiator, the Livernois pulled it out of the engine compartment.

Cold air my butt. But that filter looked blingy and I am sure it was noiser too.

Ah yes, the "hot air kit" so many car owners who failed Grade 5 science class fell for. Indeed, hot air really does rise, and Mopar is an offender too:

Oh he's still waiting to hear back from me. I'm sure he'll leave it alone.

I can't believe people are still buying that garbage. I guess the marketing folk got that gimmick right.

Re: California Legal Mods for a 2014 Pentastar V6 - 12/03/15 01:43 AM

It's been about 3 years since I installed the one on my 3.6. IIRC it actually pulls air from the bottom of the housing which I think is ducted into the radiator support so it actually pulls air from outside the engine compartment. The rubber seal around the top is to seal it to the hood to keep the hot air out.

That said I bought it more for the look and sound rather than expecting a big h/p increase. The factory isn't leaving any easy h/p laying around much these days.
