Carb for a 400?? - 10/15/15 04:43 PM
Need a carb recommendation for a 400, 4speed, 474 cam, performer intake. Looking for good street manners. It has an old 750 edelbrock on it now that is probably 12-15 years old (8867) Should I go smaller or stay with a 750? Wanna stay with the edelbrock series. thanks!

I'd probably go smaller, a 600 or a 650 will work just fine on there. Edelbrock sells both, just have to take a look at their website and see which one works the best for you.

History: The original 780 Holley came on the 425hp 396 chevy motor.
Meaning: Your carb is the right size for the engine.
Constraints: You want to keep it an Edelbrock carb.
History: Many, many 750 Edelbrock carbs have had problems and yours hasn't, at least you have been driving it for years, so you have one of the ones that work.
Solution: Fix the carb you have. There have been no developments in the Edelbrock carb lines since their version of the AVS came out.
Alternative: 800 Thunder series if you just have to have a new carb.

400's have no compression, throw in a big cam and a big carb and you don't have "good street manners" especially if it's an auto. BTDT.
Comparing a high performance, high compression, big cam 396 to a emissions choked, low compression 400 is not useful unless you plan to build the 400 up to similar compression, cam and THEN carb specs then maybe it's relevant.

i'd spend the $35-$40 for a rebuild kit and keep what you have.

Looking for good street manners.
Are you have a driveability issue right now or does it need rebuilding? Does the CFM of it seem just right or too much? What SCR do you have? I did have an eddy 1406 (600 CFM) on a 350 horse 440 in a C boat DD (came that way). was fine but was a DD. Eddys CAN have probs with a low vac signal (wild cam).

I'd rebuild the carb you have and put the $ into a tuning kit.
