My dad is in love with the old mopar spray 0318039AB. I guess the formula has changed, which he doesn't like. Any thoughts what might be a good replacement? He like the foaming aspect of the original.

I also like Kroil but I bought some Liquid Wrench 5 years ago and it worked as good, maybe better.
Like the Mopar penetrant, it also foamed up.

JB-80 by
Justice Brothers Once you break the bolt loose you need to lube it while unscrewing it or it could break on the way out. Also works great for lubing any metal to metal sliding surfaces and resists water washing it away. In my old job I sold it to huge gate company and their customers would call and Demand JB-80 to maintain their gates
For years we also sold it to many Chrysler dealerships that could have just asked for the Mopar stuff that was also on the shelf.

Works as good as anything and it doesn't smell like cancer (PB Blast'r). Kroil for the win.

The WD-40 "Specialist" Penetrating oil seems to work pretty good. At least better than the regular WD-40, I would say it is as good as the PB Blaster I normally use?

I ordered a couple of the recommendations here and will let him try them to see what he thinks. I appreciate the feedback. I collect chrysler's from 57-65, a lot of that stuff hasn't moved in awhile!

I tried it with non synthetic trans fluid and it wasn't very good, for me at least.

Everything works to some degree, but Kroil is the best I've seen.
We tested it at work by letting collars rust up on steel shafts for 3 months. 5 penetrants were tested and the Kroil won.

When we sold JB-80 to a PBlaster user, they never went back.
JB-80 just isn't in Home Depot or Pep Boys, etc. We primarily sold it to industrial accounts, dealerships, and repair shops.

Funny , we had Kroil at work and I was less than impressed with it, we also had a penetrant called GLOBO and it was the best I have used ... I still have a couple of cans stashed here at work. At home I use PB with very good results.
That said I just ordered a gallon can of Kroil because I picked up a WW2 USP Colt in original condition and it has been recommended to soak it in kroil to clean up the PATINA it has before oil it down for storage.

We used PB at work along with Castle for years.PB you can just about use water.Ive been using the WD40 penetrant thats new.Works good so far.We did use Zep at work and it was fantastic.It had teflon in it and beat all others we used in 30 years.Rocky

People laugh but i have a can of the prolong stuff for the most stubborn bolts. I use PB as the mainstay and only use that on stuff that is really bad. They used to sell it in the stores when they were promoting their corrosive snake oil for engines. Last i knew you pretty much have to order it direct from them online now.

A spray bottle with plain ol' water! Water helped create the rust, therefore, water is the solvent that will loosen the rust. And yes, I live in Iowa so I know a thing or two about rust!

Canadian Tire used to sell heat riser penetrant years ago. Can't get it now.
I use to have an 85 KW that had a seized piano type door hinge. I sprayed cans full of every brand you can imagine on it to no effect. One shot of the heat riser stuff and the red rust ran out of it. Another shot and a few more swings of the door and the door would swing shut and latch.
I'm thinking the active ingredient is acetone or toluene because the last time I could buy the stuff it was in a 4oz bottle so I poured it in a WD40 pump bottle and it ate the piston in the pump.

I absolutely love that stuff. It's all I use for rust penetrant. The part number did change to an AD. That's probably when the formula changed.

"Oxygen Sensor Thread Penetrant"
or something similar?

What’s the Best Penetrant?
A recent online article provided some information on various penetrating oils. A subjective test of all the popular penetrates with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a “scientifically rusted” environment resulted in the following numbers.
Penetrating oils ……….Average torque load to loosen
No Oil used 516 pounds
WD-40 238 pounds
PB Blaster 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench 127 pounds
Kano Kroil 106 pounds
ATF*-Acetone mix 53 pounds
The ATF*-Acetone mix was a “home brew” mix of 50% – 50% by volume automatic transmission fluid and acetone. It has been said that lacquer thinner may be used as a substitute for acetone.

I believe the 50/50 acetone/ATF works... that said, how many of us use heat if the fastener won't move with reasonable torque? Hitting acetone + ATF with a torch would be "interesting".

I think any penetrant "works" better if it's applied and subject to 1 or more heat cycles.
I learned about kroil when I worked in an auto shop where we installed a lot of tube headers. Spray some kroil on run vehicle for 10 minutes, spray a little more on let cool and remove the flange bolts and heat riser without ever breaking studs. Sometimes the stud would come out with the nut.
Is the mopar stuff called MP50? I've had good results with that, and pb too, but I don't like the smell of pb either.

It's not that dramatic, it does burn and I'm sure some hamfisted mekanik has burned some car/building/themselves/other. The idea is to gradually build heat, then spray the penetrant. Going back and forth on torque helps too.

Hands down I will always use the 50/50 Acetone Trans fluid mix. I broke loose 11 45-year old brake line nuts without twisting the line. I can, and will, reuse all of them.

Kroil, I wasn't impressed
PB works but stinks
A couple brands of the freeze off by different companies, Rip OFF
Liquid wrench so-so
A friend at another shop gave me a can of Free all to try and it is the current favorite in the shop. it has consistently worked where others did not. it is not readily available so I buy it online by the case

I had to remove the pitman. I removed the nut and got all of the rust and grease off of the splines so the the Acetone mix could penetrate. I was careful not to squirt the stuff everywhere because I wanted to see how it would go through when I squirted it on the nut side. After about a half hour the stuff started running out of the bottom side towards the steering box.

I've highlighted the things I think are helpful clarifications.
Machinist's Workshop V20 number 2, April/May 007, page 35
Article: “Testing Penetrating oils”
This reports a test of penetrating oils where they measured the force required to loosen rusty test devices. The details reported here were validated by the original article author. He also added some details on the methods.
You must buy the issue if you want to see how they did the test. The back issue is available for purchase.
The table below extracts the results table The lower the number of pounds the better. Interesting that a simple mix of acetone and power steering fluid (PSF) works the best!
Penetrating oil Average load Price per fluid ounce
None 516 pounds
WD-40 238 pounds $0.25
PB Blaster 214 pounds $0.35
Liquid Wrench 127 pounds $0.21

1) These are loads required to free the test piece after 8 hours of immersion in penetrating oil. This is probably not representative of a quick squirt just before a wrench is applied.

There are various power steering fluids so we can only guess that the one used was one with low viscosity and high detergents.
My own experience has been that PB Blaster is good when applied the day or days before. Even better reapplying each day. I like it for situations where impact is not possible or seems inappropriate. Removal usually requires slow steady force. Stuff doesn't 'break free' but feels more like a fastener with interference fit.
Kroil seems better for last minute use. Sili-kroil seems to help more in making it easier to turn once the bolt has broken free.
I agree with those that like the sprays specifically for freeing equipment

I bought a can of that last month, to give it a try, as it's available locally, at pretty much all the parts stores.
Kroil, i have to order thru the manufacturer, and now shipping costs make it prohibitive.
That Seafoam stuff works well, my two cents on the subject.

If you want good quality stuff, go to a real hardware store, not home depot or lowes, Autozone, Advanced or Oriellys.... I use Grainger, Industrial Supply, Marshall's Industrial Hardware, Fastenal...McMaster Carr for mail order. Most of the chain auto parts stores do not have quality anything hardware/chemical wise typically unless they get it at a price point that they can make an uber profit.

I use PB Blaster most of the time. Over the years, I've tried many penetrants. I've found that my favorite penetrant is a blue tip wrench. I know you cannot utilize heat in all situations but, anytime I can, after using PB blaster and all the other tricks and the bolt is still stuck, I break out the torch and heat the surrounding metal. I've not had one single instance where I could not get the hardware loose after hitting it with heat.
I just did this two weeks ago. I almost want to just start breaking out the torch first and forget penetrants all together as I've never had much luck with any of them.

Should you always try to
tighten a bolt or stud a teeny bit,
before loosening it?
The instructions for the official Mopar Oxygen sensor removal penetrant spray called for this tightening before loosening.

I've actually had really good luck with the WD-40 brand "rust release". Pulled all 1976 exhaust manifold bolts on my Warlock without a problem, broke free all of the original brake lines loose on my 1969 Dart, as well as a few other situations.
For now, it's my "go-to" and get to it a couple of days before I need to break something loose.
