Electrical problem in 1992 Grand Voyager - 09/14/15 08:12 PM

OK gents, this one has me stumped. I have no back-up lights in the car when it's in reverse (or any other gear). I have:
1. Replaced the PRNDL switch on the transmission.
2. Replaced the Neut. Start/Back-up light switch on the trans.
3. Checked for a good ground on the X2 circuit.
4. Checked voltage...
A. There is 12V at the fuse (Yes, the fuse is good)
B. There is 12V at the switch on the trans.
C. There is no voltage at the bulb sockets, either one.
5. ALL other lights, and EVERYTHING else on the car works just fine. Just no reverse lights.

Guesses???

I'd start by seperating the bulkhead & check the right circuit (both halves) for continuity & either work up or downstream from there

I believe their is a back up light relay on the firewall right next to another relay. I had a 92 minivan many years ago and I had a similar problem. I am going by memory which isn`t so good anymore.

Thanks for this... The schematic does not show a relay in the circuit, but I have a box full of those little square jobbies. They seem to cause a lot of trouble. I'll definitely look into this. -Ron

From what I remember the 92 Caravan would have used a back-up light relay if it had the 41TE the four speed auto trans. Ron

Thanks so much to both of you who suggested the relay. I did indeed find one that had the correct colour wires feeding it. Changed that out and the lights work. What annoys me is that there is a relay there in the first place. For one, my old cars have all those lighting circuits that have worked perfectly for 40 or 50 years. These nitwit designers and engineers put that stuff in just to screw the consumer. It just isn't necessary.. I have no plans no buy anything newer than OBD-I, and OBD-I is bad enough. The other peeve is that the service manual and schematic for the car make no mention of a relay in the circuit. Sorry for the rant, but it just reinforces my belief that new cars are junk. Thanks again for your assistance.
