Factory Fuel pump cooler? Mopar cop car question

So I was at the the MN State Fair and the MN State Patrol had some display cars out. Our state patrol hid a 1979 Dodge St. Regis from being sold as it was the 50th anniversary squad. I was talking with the care taker of the squad and he let me give it a good look over (the car is really unmolested). I looked under the hood and was talking to him about all the coolers these squads had. He then stated "yeah even the fuel pump had a cooler, I had to replace the pump with a normal pumps and block off the cooler lines"

I am wondering was there such a thing that mopar put on the cop car engines or did he have it confused with something emissions related?

Never heard of a fuel pump cooler. But who knows

I've seen engine oil coolers, transmission coolers, even power steering pump coolers on factory cop cars or taxis. Never seen a fuel pump cooler.

Yeah that's what I thought, I had never heard of that either. I was thinking it might of been a system to help stranded motorists get gas without having to siphon from the tank. I just wanted to make sure I was correct.

A fuel cooler can help in a return style system... it cools off the return fuel which may get warm passing by the exhaust and/or engine. That way the fuel in the tank does not get hot and promote vapor lock. Never heard of one an a mechanical engine driven pump though.

I've seen cop cars with a fuel pump bypass (similar to a vapor separator) but never a fuel cooler.

I think he's slightly mistaken. the oil cooler return line on every cop car I ever worked on was through a special hollow fuel pump bolt. The right hand side (front bolt). This allowed the cooler, returned oil to hit the timing chain on its way back to the pan. It's quite a brilliant design.

So that's what he's probably mentioning. I could be wrong, but there was never any production line fuel cooler. The possibility of a dealer-added on gimmick or cop garage mod is certainly there... but I doubt that. Fuel doesn't heat, and adding a cooler near the engine bay is only going to induce heat soak when idling for long periods of time or leaving the car parked. something cop cars do a lot of

Could be most anything, probably an emission canister or possibly the oil cooler return.

I have a buddy who was having problems with his battery not charging. The guy at NAPA told him to pull off the alternator and bring it in to be tested. This guy spent most of the day getting his truck up in the air and pulling the alternator. He took it to the NAPA store and laid it on the counter. The NAPA guy said "I thought you had a charging problem?" My buddy said "I do". Counter guy says "why did you bring me the starter?"

True story. A lot of people just don't know their way around an engine compartment.

Having owned a bunch of Mopar Squad cars, including from that era, I think VincentVega is right. I think the caretaker was confused because of the Mopar Engine Oil Cooler line that runs thru the back bolt to fuel pump.
