1974 charger SE 400 4 spd ???? - 08/31/15 06:49 PM

I just pick up this 1974 charger SE 400 bb bench pistol grip 4spd car. Dark silver poly ja5 with b6 blue interior.
Any body know how many they made of this combo? cars been of the road for over 20 years and I'm going to put it back on the road in the next few weeks. besides a little rust in the lower fenders and lower rust in quarters the car has no rust anywhere else. floors and trunk are still factory paint. very solid car. thanks for any info.

that's great. If the underneath is still nice, be a good time to hit it with some rubberized undercoating to protect it before restoration

Can't help with #'s but it is low number for sure.
Have fun making it nice

WP29P4 Charger SE 400-4bbl 2,272 automatic, 104 4spd

WH23L4 Charger HDTP 360-4 HP 567 automatic, 94 4spd

WL21L4 Charger CPE 360-4 HP 68 automatic, 1 4spd

WL21P4 Charger CPE 400-4 20 automatic, 5 4spd

Less common in the lower trim levels (4spd's), but overall low numbers.

Wow! Love the color combo on that car!! Nice find.

Yes. 104.
The 360 L code only was a Rallye option. The J and K codes I believe are the nonRallye 360s.

Very nice and the body sounds great... easy repair. After getting it on the road what are your plans?

Makes you wonder just how rare of a Charger this one is being shipped to Canada. Seen a lot of then with an Automatic but that four speed makes it special. Nice buy from the Auction.

Speaking of Chargers in Alberta, here's my old car that a guy in Calgary owns now. 340 Automatic 1973 Rallye that I had purchased out of Phoenix back in 1984. This car has NEVER had any rust.

Thanks for the info and comments everyone. WOW 104 cars that's very cool.
here's some pics of the car the day I cleaned it out, floors are awesome.
The driver's floor pan was crusty but no holes or swelling.

pics of the engine bay. all original paint. The power bulge hood is not original, but I have the original flat hood I will put back on. I don't have any of the emblems for the car? if any one can help me that would be great. sorry I do have one se for the roof and the little dodge badge for the trunk.

I'd hang onto that bulge hood if I were you. Very hard to find and when you do, they are not cheep. You might decide the bulge hood looks better after you set the flat hood on it.

(not to mention, it looks like you have the no-vent bulge hood which would be '74 only)

Yep I'd paint both hoods but use the Bulge Hood on the car if it was mine.

Would you like some 14x6 Rallye wheels for the car? I tried selling a set at the Creston Swap Meet this past weekend with no takers. Don't want a fortune out of them either.

Hello everyone. thanks for the comments on the car. Ya not sure what to do with the power bulge hood, looks good on the car but I'm trying to keep it stock. I had no idea the bulge hood was so rare or worth so much!! so not sure what to do with it.

Update....I bought a 1973 charger for parts today. Red with balck interior now get this!! 225 slant six with 3 speed on the tree.!! no engine but trany ect there. very very rusty car but full of great parts. perfect windshield and glass, trim around windshield (I need),very nice upper and lower black panels, black seats (bench),disc brakes, perfect black dash pad !!. I will post pics tomorrow.

Maybe I should re-enforce the floor before I cut the quarters off, naugh it'll be OK.

Great color combo. At first I thought you had the year wrong. I've never seen JA5 on anything other than a 73. I looked it up on Hamtramck-Historical and sure enough...it was available in 74 on the Charger. It was a one year only color on the A and E bodies.(1973)

These are US numbers, so if it's a Canadian car it would not be included in the above.

Also, the 360 was available in the SE - 802 US-spec cars were were built, according to Galen's White Book.

I thought you said it had a perfect dash pad??? Looks pretty wasted in the photo. Those are almost impossible to find good - they were tough 30 years ago.

well I have the car in primer now. I sanded it down to bare metal and then primed it. No body work or filler work yet. car is very straight. I also cleaned and under coated the bottom with black rubberized undercoat.
Found the factory tip hangers still in place? The diff is 8 3/4 with 323 suregrip.

You need to start a new thread in the "Restoration/Projects" section!

Good point! I think I read somewhere to assume ~30% for Canada made. (fendertag should show this)

Yes, 360's were an option for SEs. Just not the "L" coded for high performance.
