96 neon engine code 51

96 neon engine code 51 - 08/28/15 03:19 AM

My neon has 64k miles on it. I was getting about 30mpg. Now 21. I tried replacing o2 sensor but it threw same code. Under that code it list a multitude of things it could be. What I don't understand is if it's o2 it should throw that code. If it's a map sensor it should throw that code right. Why is it giving me such a generic code. Vacuum? I dont hear any leaks. Plugged cat? Doesn't idle rough. Any suggestions

96 Neons are OBDII and give a more detailed code than "51".

Get a code reader or take it to a parts store and get the Pxxxx code.

P0171. Sorry forgot to add that. Fuel pressure reads 54psi at idle

What that code means is that the engine is seeing a lean condition.

It might be the O2 sensor, it might be a vacuum leak, it might be a plugged/weak injector, it might be a wiring/connection issue, it might be an EGR issue.

I read one guy had oil in his connector at the ECU that caused this code.

It does not necessarily mean the O2 sensor is the problem.

Fuel pressure at idle might be ok, but what is it under load? At cruise?

Gonna have to do some troubleshooting to narrow it down.
