WHAT IS THE BEST OIL ??? - 08/27/15 02:31 AM

1970 440..NUMBERS MATCHING CAR....
THE 440 HAS BEEN REBUILT PRIOR TO MY OWNERSHIP.

IT HAS AN MSD IGNITION, HUGHES CAM, TTI HEADERS...
I USE IT FOR SHOWS...AND GENERAL DRIVING PLEASURE...

IT BURNS A LITTLE OIL...NOT ENOUGH TO MAKE ME REBUILD THE ENGINE.

I HAVE BEEN USING CASTROL GTX 20W/50 PLUS SOME LUCAS OIL.

I WAS TOLD BY THE CASTROL COMPANY NOT TO USE THIS OIL...AS MY 440 HAS FLAT TAPPETS AND REQUIRES SOME ZINC . THEY SUGGEST CASTROL EDGE.
I WAS TOLD NOT TO PUT ANY TYPE OF SYNTHETIC OIL IN THIS MOTOR.

HOW ABOUT USING THE GTX 20W/50 WITH A ZINC ADDATIVE???
ANY THOUGHTS ?????

I agree, no to synthetic and yes to high zinc oil. I guess Castrol Edge is a high zinc oil? I'm not familiar, but my '80 Aspen 360 is not a roller cam so I use Valvoline Racing Oil, 20W-50 as well. It is a high zinc content and my oil pressure is right where I want it and engine runs smooth and quiet.

Lots of ways to deal with Zinc. Regular car oil + Zinc additive is good. If you need 20W50 that's a good place to start plus additive. If oil pressure is OK with lower viscosity, no need for the 20W50.

Another choice is an oil with high zinc to start with. I guess that is what Castrol recommended. Joe Gibbs, Brad Penn and others have this also.

My choice is diesel engine oil. Shell Rotella 15W40. This works for me and many others with flat tappet, readily available and cost effective. Pick your poison.

As far as synthetic, the 440 is no different from any other engine. Some additional risk of leaks if changing on a seasoned engine. Mobile 1 20W50 does have high zinc and would be fine with a flat tappet but would not recommend it in your case.

Valvoline VR-1 is a reasonably good choice for this application. Not so expensive.

Why would you think anyone on this site would know more about oil than Castrol?

Run what they tell you to if you want to run Castrol oil.

I use the Valvoline VR1 racing oil also. I have used Valvoline all my life since the early 70's. I figured if Sox & Martin used it then its good enough for me and it has been. Ron

No Brad Penn Oil promoters?

Question: A friend is using Royal Purple (full synthetic) oil, any issues with switching to a non-full synthetic oil? Besides having a little extra cash in their pocket...
