71 AMD cuda fenders

71 AMD cuda fenders - 08/26/15 02:20 AM

I bought new AMD 71 cuda fenders. Installed and painted. When I put my 15" rally's on , the front of the tire hits the front lower lip on the fender. When you turn left its the pass tire that hits , when you turn right the drivers hits. The tire are the same ones that come off the car. I replaced my stock fenders with the Gilled AMD fenders
What my options ?

How much does it hit? Too much to roll or trim the lip? Or go to a shorter tire.

The drivers side just barely touches, the passenger side is worse, the tire pushes past it when turning left but to return straight it catches and will bend the fender
I believe I will have to cut the lip , move it over and reweld it then repaint , I am hoping there is a solution so I don't have to.

My friend has the same AMD fender no problem, I asked a Mopar resto shop I know he has no problems, I called AMD they haven't heard of the problem

You didn't say what size tire that on the 15 inch rallyes?
The stock size would be an F-60/15 which is a P235/60r15.
P245/60r15's (G-60) might clear, but a P255/60r15 will definitely rub on the front lower fender lips on both L&R.

Also, are they 15 x 7's or 15 x 6.5's?

Were the original fender lips stock or reworked to clear larger tires?

Sorry to hear about the AMD 71 poor fender fit, all I can tell you is that when I installed my painted AMD 71 fenders on my Cuda the same deal -- the passengers side doesn't fit worth a $hit -- way too close to the front of the door skin. Driver's side fit a LOT better, didn't take too much screwing around to make it fit good. Again, the passenger's side is still a nightmare.

Best of luck!!

Were the fenders test fitted prior to paint?

When you say "way to close to the front of the door skin" are you talking at one point as in high, center (bodyline) or low?

All panels should be fitted before any bodywork begins, when bare metal or in primer.

I've never understood why on a restoration people paint panels before installing them, Chrysler didn't do it that way on the assembly line. (other than trying to make a show car that was far more perfect than Chrysler ever built.)

That sucks. We run 245/70-15 on the fronts on several cars with no problems. Original fenders of course.

I was thinking a company made a tool to role the fender lips up with? I remember that from some of the magazines a few years back.

Are you sure that your original fenders weren't trimmed down or rolled/bent at the lower fender tips for clearance?

The tires that you're running are 1.3 inches taller than what the factory used. (26.1 inches vs 27.4 inches diameter)

The reason that I asked whether you had 15 x 7 or 15 x 6.5 inch rallyes is that the 15 x 7's add the width to the outside which makes it more likely to rub at the point you are describing (lower front) when using taller tires.

The rims I use are 15x7. I contacted my buddy he has the same size tire rim combo and he also used AMD Gilled fenders. He had no problems. I check with a couple body shops and a frame shop they say my car measures good. They say the fender is wrong. The wheel well lip is about 1/4" shorter on the passengers , the drivers is correct length. Last night I cut and welded both side to match, now the tires fit . I only cut out 1/4 " pie shape 4" long.
Originally I bought the year one 17" rally's and went with a tire that matched the height of my BFGs . They never fit and I thought it was my issue with tire size so I bought the recommended year one size tire . They still did not fit. After last night fitting my 15" tires ,I tried the year one 17" and they fit as well. I ask for help from AMD they never got back to me yesterday. I told them the problem and sent picture. I got a email this morning that was the wrong info. I sent pictures of the tire hitting and thinner lip also my repair. I told him the fender issue has cost me about $1500 . The reply was " glad you fixed it" have a nice day. Guess they are not interested in the problem.
Thanks
