Need a little help from Techs

I have come to the conclusion I will Need to change out the distributor. I have it sitting right here in front of me. I have checked the primary and secondary of coil and it checks out also coil tower to pin 11 or 12 also checks out. I did a bench test on the transistor that is inconclusive(don't have the proper analog meter) I spent a good hour researching replacement transistors and can only find them in lots of 100 or more. Seems like a scam, $10 part bad and have to replace the whole unit. It is what it is, too cold right now to mess with it for a few days. Again thanks for the help. Mo

Have you tried Radio shack for the transistor you need?

It may be that they would have one. But I can't find the data sheet so substitution would be an SWAG at best. This is a IGBT type (insulated gate bi-polar transistor) I would guess it has some kind of diode built in to prevent feedback from frying the PCM.

What is the # of the transistor you need? I work in the medical electronics field, and know a few sources.

Have you ever read Dr. Jacob's book on ignitions? IIRC, it contains instructions on substituting a common Mopar ECU in cases like this. I can look for my copy tonight, or someone else may have a copy handy.

I forget about thinking outside the box on things like this. A guy I worked for got a Yugo for free. Couldn't get parts for it. He ended up using the base of an old GM HEI distrib he had laying around and used that to "ignite" the ignition system. Used that pos for a parts runner. Another fave of mine was back in the day using the old school mopar voltage regulator to get the charging systems working on trucks that the PCM driver for full field died on. I would be very interested in seeing that conversion. And FWIW I've run into a couple "reman" distributers (aftermarket) that were bad out of the box. We pretty much stick to selling the Chrysler one which means when the customer sees the price they tow it elsewhere.

   Those transistors appear to only be sold in large bulk quantity. I think I found one that may work., It is in the Mouser catalog. I will check with our electonics guru. The weird thing is we have 2 distributors and both check out everywhere but the transistor. Seems like a 4 dollar chip is the weak link.
