Power Steering Leak

69 Coronet, 383

On full lock the power steering fluid is spraying out 1 side of the cap, I turned the cap the other way round and the spray is coming from the other side so it's obviously only 1 side of the cap that is the problem, is it a case of of just replacing the cap or is there anything else I can look for ? The seal looks ok on it, not sure if you can tell from the below pic, if I need to order a cap is there any particular one I need to get as I couldn't see any numbers on it ? The pump has some numbers on it, see below, also it says vented on the cap but where exactly is it venting as I can't see any holes, I assume the grooves are the vents ? Thanks

Sounds like it might be over filled. I hope you're not holding it at full lock for long.

Thanks but it wasn't reading anything on the dipstick so was low if anything, i'll probably try a new cap or gasket first, any idea what cap I need and where to get one ? Thanks

that doesn't look like a power steering cap. more like a gas tank cap. not sure what you have on your side of the pond but an auto parts store might have what you need. i know Classic Industries has the correct one.

It has the dipstick attached to it though so I assume it's a power steering cap for something, i'll try and order the correct cap, thanks

Anyone know what cap I should order ? Classic Industries only have a cap for a Saginaw pump, pretty sure I don't have one of them

Looks like a cap for a Federal pump, not a Saginaw. Not available new, just NOS and used.

Wasn't recommending Jim's, just showing it's there and it's not cheap.

Anything else I can try to stop it leaking ? Thought about fitting a better homemade rubber seal to it or something ?

I read a thread on FABO that someone was able to use a seal from a gas cap they had lying around to fix this problem. No more info than that though. You might take the cap to the parts store and see if any of the gas caps there could be a donor. Or you could go here and see if anything will work

I guess we can assume that this pump has been in use on the car for sometime and that this a recent problem. If not the case, was it properly bled to remove all air bubbles after installation?

Possible bad valve or spring in pump creating excessive pressure. Believe there are tools to measure pressure.
