'10 Charger Police in limp mode and sensors

'10 Charger Police in limp mode and sensors - 08/14/15 03:12 AM

Hoping someone has some late model knowledge; 2010 Charger Police with 5.7. Got it back running after PD butchered things removing equipment. Now it's throwing 3 codes; the rear wheel speed sensors and I think the ABS (dang I already forgot...mechanic called and told me). He's kind of scratching his head right now. He thinks it's unlikely that all three sensors went bad, and said it's not common for those speed sensors to go bad. You just clean them once in awhile and they're good. Wondering if it could be something with the trans valve body. I know an issue there will put it in limp mode, but could that throw the speed and other sensors? On an unrelated note (I don't think it's related); no turn signals or wipers.

Turn signals and wipers might be related. The PCM, TCM and ABS/Trac Control Module all communicate through the TIPM, which is integrated with the Front Control Module. The front lighting and wiper controls also communicate through the TIPM/FCM. If there's a problem with the FCM, or if someone cut a wire they shouldn't have, it could cause all of your problems. The early NAG1 transmissions had some valve body issues, but they were generally resolved by 2010, so this is most likely a control issue. If whoever removed the equipment cut the wiring for CAN communication with the FCM, this would cause all of your problems. I would start looking for any cut wires. The CAN com wiring is usually in twisted pairs.

The NAG1 trans has no output speed sensor, so it uses the average of the two rear wheel speed sensors to determine output shaft speed, slip, converter lockup, etc. If this signal is lost, of if the front sensors provide information that conflicts with the rear signals, the trans will enter limp up mode. The signals are all processed through the TIPM, so if communication is lost, that would cause all of your issues.

Thanks so much Joe for the info! I will pass this on to mechanic right now.

Do you know if this calls for pulliing the interior, or are we talking all exterior run wiring?

Thanks again.

The wiring to the TIPM/FCM is both inside and outside. I would look anywhere it looks like someone might have cut wires. The rear wheel sensor wiring comes up through the trunk floor and runs along the passenger side floor, then out the firewall connector. It sounds more likely that something under the dash has been cut, possibly between the TCM and TIPM. I believe there are only two bulkhead connectors that go through the firewall. The main harness is on the passenger side, behind the HVAC unit. The other smaller harness runs from the transmission, through the firewall almost in the front center, and connects to the TCM. If any wires in either harness are cut, especially twisted pairs, this could be your problem. A less likely culprit could be the conductor plate in the tranny, but that's unlikely. This really sounds like a wiring/CAN communication problem.

So I text mechanic asking for his email so I could send him this info and he answered back "I just finished a banzai blast down I-95". I answered "you fixed it"?!

As you wrote Joe12459, all related to TCM/TIPM modules stuff. I haven't got to talk to him in depth as to exactly what he had to replace, but this guy does awesome work. He said there was a ton of "butchered wiring and harnesses missing lock connectors, "no communication with the steering angle sensor. All related within Module" was part of his text.

I picked it up last night, but it was pretty late so I didn't want to keep him. We're going to talk more Monday. Drove perfectly and EVERYTHING works again, and no engine, abs, etc., lights. He restored cut harnesses with new police harnesses as I requested. Parts cost me a pretty penny but I wanted to keep all that stuff in tact. I'm weird that way, lol.

Thanks again Joe.

Sweet! I'm happy everything worked out ok. The technology in these cars is great when it works, but it could be a real pain in the ass to track down even small issues.

Oh ya. The car is very fast, and gets 20mpg, but when something happens, without alot of expensive equipment, you are left staring and scratching your head.

Thanks again.
