pertronix igniter III

pertronix igniter III - 08/12/15 08:19 PM

anyone have any experience with this? from the description on the page, it sounds like an awesome unit, doing most or all of what an MSD box does. if that's the case, i'd rather run that than the MSD box. i also like it because it will allow me to run the prestolite distributor i have, giving the engine a stock look, but still give me a rev limiter.

it supposedly does multiple spark, so i'm not sure what is needed for a tach hookup, but it does look pretty cool.

I have a billet Pertronix III distributor and it's great! The rev limiter works, hit it a few times. I need to set it higher, left it on default rpm until after break-in.
drive
As long as their unit fits I say go for it.

good information, but i was hoping to find someone who has used it. i'm really thinking of doing this and getting rid of the MSD.

i know modern electronics are incredible in space savings, but it's hard to imagine how they get most or all of what is going on in an MSD box into that little container.

a friend has one on his 427 vette. seems to work fine. the rev limiter is not a soft touch. hit the limit and the engine quits. for me, i want to try the new fbo unit. simple plug in with mopar harness and you can carry an inexpensive auto store box in the trunk for a spare; something that can't be done with pertronix or msd.

Re: pertronix igniter III - 08/13/15 10:18 PM

I am currently running the III with the correct III coil and Taylor 8MM Street Thunder Suppressor wires.

It appears to be just fine. I replaced a Mopar electronic ignition with gold box.

I like that it is all hidden with no extras harness short of the one extra wire from the dizzy. I heat shrinked them together so it looks like one at first glance. I took an extra ballast and opened the back and replaced the windings with a solid piece of #12 copper.(The Look I wanted was stock appearing)

Been running since late last year and other than having to re-curve the point type dizzy I decided to use, there have been no issues and as good or better than the old electronic. My plugs look better than they ever have.

Just make sure and use all the correct components recommended by Pertronix.

that sounds great! i'm going for a very stock look as well, (hence rebuilding the prestolite), and would love to do that. good info about the ballast, thanks. and the tip about current components.

i'm not thrilled about the rev limiter not being a soft type, but can live with that.

i'll post if/when i make the conversion.

What distributor are you running it in ? When I did a search on the pertronics website it doesn't show the III with any prestolite numbers .

it is a prestolite. i haven't plugged in the number yet, i will do that this weekend. if it doesn't fit, well, that takes care of that, but it did say all distributors 62-71 or something like that.
