Factory style electronic distributor leaking oil inside.

As in through the shaft, isn't there an o-ring or something that seals it? Does anyone have a source and a part number or is it a match it up thing? Or should I just replace the distributor?

on my older points dist it has a shaft oiler on the side and the shaft has a spiral groove to oil the bushing.

the others just have a bushing on both ends and the shaft. maybe it's worn to the point of leaking but wouldn't gravity be working against it wicking up the shaft?

and the housing has drain holes in the bottom, is that where you see it coming out?

I just picked up a new reman RB point dist for 30$

looking at the procomp HEI dist for 55$ or a RTR billet dist for 75$ even have a big GM cap mopar HEI dist for 60$

I also got the FBO advance limiter plate to use in the points dist when the procomp gets here and it come out.

drive out the lower shaft roll pin/remove the collar & add shims to reduce the axial play to .005" Speedway motors has a nice kit of flat shims for cheap. its going up then dripping out the 2 drain holes in the bottom of the dist "bowl"? you might have alot of blowby pressure contributing to this. Actually that (not the blowby but it being lubed) is a good thing as they dont come with the manual oiler side cups like they used to for the bushings but the excessive dripping is unsightly

Actually leaking in the cap and out the bottom of the bowl then blowing on the coil and fan (68 440 no A/C or PS). It also noticed a puddle at the base where it meets the block after my 1100 mile run. I was thinking the o-ring at the base was leaking due to the puddle but then today popped the cap looking at some stuff and found the oil and put it all together. I think I have an extra distributor or 2 but I would have to clean them up and see if they work, might be quicker and easier to buy a rebuilt one since as Scratch pointed out they are inexpensive.

Thanks Robert, I haven't seen any other signs of blow by on this thing so far but I will double check a few things. I take it you have seen excessive shaft play cause this leak before?

shaft play + bushing to shaft clearance combined but I would check the PCV/blowby condition as it is being pressured up in there (all the way up into the "bowl"). shimming the lower shaft is the easy one to correct & side bennie it reduces spark scatter from intergear slot/tang interface slop. EDIT With more thought I think excessive blowby at WOT is moving oil up into the dist
