Valve Spring Compressor

I am looking to purchase a shaft mounted valve spring compressor. I need to add the inner springs after I break in the cam. Any recommendations on which to purchase?

I made one for less than $20 a little crude but works great!

bought this one from Ed Cheeseburger back in the 80s..have used it on standard sb heads...w2 heads and eddy heads...also has a adapter to use on BB heads. Ed is no longer in business...but it does not look hard to duplicate.

I modified the head to allow to get to valve springs went the engine is set back.

I bought the Proform one, it wasn't super expensive, haven't used it yet.

What RT said, have your welder add the bracket (firmly) & use an old shaft so you dont mar your good ones

I made a couple over the years and bought quite a few also. Here's a homemade one.

Wizards Warehouse is a blown motor specialty retailer/speed shop.

He also has the trick est tools in the land, might want to check them out for store bought compressors.

I have it, IIRC it was around 60 bucks, and it works very well no complaints. You can put those inner springs in about as quickly as you can lash the valves.

I bought and used one like this pictured below.

I Pulled the valve springs, one cylinder at a time, to replace valve-seals. Used compressed-air to keep the valves shut. Worked great.

Fairly cheap and (guessing, in most places) locally available. I bought mine at a Pep Boys, but Harbor Freight ($13) and most of the automotive tool makers sell similar versions as well (usually $30 or less).

I had the Craftsman version of this , it's great for low rate/pressure springs , think stock non HP , but after many uses with higher rate springs it started to self destruct and creating small metal chips. I tossed it and bought the Proform unit i mentioned.

I used mine for removing High-Performance, Racing-Type Valve Springs, but admittedly, I haven't needed to use it all that often, so maybe in time, it would fail or develop issues.

I actually bought Two of this type. One was a lot more stoutly built, better materials, so that's the one I used.

Maybe the Proform Tool would last longer with frequent use?

I bought that one from Hughes to do my inner springs after break in. You just need to make sure you are lined up correctly before you start pulling. I replaced the inner springs with the engine in my truck, #7 and 8 cylinders were a bit of a pain because of the firewall but all in all it was less painful then I imagined.

This is the best one I have ever used by far for doing the valve springs on the car. I bought it from Mancini and its really nice as you run the allen bolt down and then you can use both hands to work on it as you dont have to hold the tool with one hand. Ron

Definitely an operator thing , sometimes you might need 2 hands to get the keepers in ?

The craftsman one may not have been the best, I bought 20 years ago, but changing out the springs recently when a Crane spring broke that was speced for a little more that stock Comp hyd. I got from Dwayne porter pretty much killed it.

I have seen some stout ones of the type that are like you posted but they get pretty pricey for what they are and I wanted to step up to something better since you need to take the rockers off anyway and a shaft mounted puller seems to be ... for me ... the better way to go.

Most of my spring work is done with heads on the bench and I recently had to step up my head off the engine compressor because the heavier springs I started to use were getting to be a little too much for my 50yr old C clamp type also.

Where did you get that?
