Small block oil pan gasket issue

Replaced the oil pump in my 69 Coronet. Engine is a stock 318. I assumed it was the original engine ( hopefully this assumption hasn't bit me in the tail & being the cause of my problem). Anyway, I installed the new oil pump & pickup. When I proceeded to mount the new oil pan gasket, I am not comfortable with the way the seals at the front & back of engine fit on the pan. The tips that slide through the pans slotted holes are too big & won't let the seals mount flat against the pan. The one tip I tried to pull through with pliers broke & still won't let seal rest flat against the pan. Looks to me that it will guarantee major oil leakage if I try to mounting the pan with this gasket set up. Gasket set I had purchased was FelPro # OS6566C1. It is listed as to being the correct part for dodge small blocks from 59-69. I didn't want to cut the seals guide tips off yet because I was afraid of the seals sliding out of position (causing leakage). The repair is being done with the engine still in the car.
I was curious if anyone on this forum has encountered a similar issue & what was done or used to fix the problem. Is there major oil pan differences on the 70 & newer 318 that prohibits me from trying that style gasket ? According to my local Napa store, the front & real seals are different.

Just asking but do you have the right seal on the right end of the pan? If I remember right the nibs (tips) are two different sizes.

I ended up pulling a nib off of each seal trying to seat them in. The nibs seam to be too big for the slots at the front & rear of the pan.

I don`t think 70 up used those rubber tabs around the pan. Do you have some pics of the old oil pan end seals and the new ones? You may want to try a different brand gasket. Does it look like this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Victor-OS30520X-...f06&vxp=mtr

early 64-69 318 pan has (6) holes for front seal. '70 up (318) has (2) holes (one bigger than the other) & both ends take the same gasket. If you have the correct gaskets & the broken nubs are interfering you might cut them flush so the gasket will fit close then use some killer gasket cement like "the right stuff". More info, what do you have/whats going on

Mopars4ever: yes, that is the style gasket & seal kit I got from FelPro. My pan does have 6 holes on the front & back for the seals. The nubs are too big & will not fit thru the holes & slots.

Rapidrobert: I have thought about cutting them & using the right stuff but was only going to do that as a last resort.

My new leaking pan and gasket are on my E58 360. I had mechanic install it and it's leaking bad. I was told that the end gasket goes on the bottom of the side gasket at rear, and on top at the front, and maybe the mechanic did that wrong. The other suggestion was to buy a Superformance gasket as they are very high quality. I've yet to pull the pan myself and give it a shot, so I don't know how the end gaskets went in. I can see plenty of sealant though. The 360 and 318 use different pan, but maybe some of this applies.

I sure can tell you the oil pan on the 89-318 I got from you was sealed to the block for sure. not sure if you had it changed before, but it had some killer black rtv with a cork gasket/metal center that I had to hammer a flat putty knife down both sides of the block to cut it loose.

The reason I asked was that I installed a pan gasket on a 318 many years ago and had the same issue as you with the rubber nubs being too big. I vaguely remember that I ended up using a diiferent brand gasket IIRC.

if you have the right gasket but the nibs are a bit too big you can drill out the pan holes easily enough (assuming everything else is spot on) but yes it would be better to get ones that fit. As said make sure it is the right one

That's the avenue I am going to try today. Got hammered with overtime at work & haven't had a chance to work on my car since I posted.

Nope, I never changed it and was told it was original. It was bone dry under that engine, I remember that.

Update: I ended up taking a razor blade & narrowing the base of the nubs so they fit through the holes of the oil pan. I felt more comfortable doing that rather than cutting them off completely. Pan sealed great & doesn't leak.
