hot starter - 01/19/09 01:34 PM
I have a 7o cuda with 528 stroker with 2 1/8 inch headers. Starter turns motor fine when its cool but after the motor runs it will barely turn it over until it sits for about a 1/2 hr.whats the cure? Do I need a new starter, specialty starter, shield or ?
Thanks for any feed back

Sometimes timing advanced a little to far can cause this as can a heat soaked starter. You could go to a mini starter to get it away from the exhaust. Here's some info from the tech archives.

Go with the mini or shield the starter with sheet metal, anything to get the starter motor away from heat. My guess is that the exhaust system is too close to the starter. This is a common problem on front wheel drive cars with the reduced engine compartment space.

Curious what your running for your initial and total timing?
If you have to have that gear reduction sound, another option may be to wrap the headers that are in close proximity to the starter with that heat reflective insulation. I had to wrap one of my torsion bars and my speedometer cable with some because my 2 inch TTI's came close to them. It's pretty amazing stuff.
