Largest, Tallest Rear tire/wheel combo for '64 Dodge 330 - 06/07/15 10:28 PM

Hi guys/gals,

I'd like to put a set of Mickey Thompson Drag Radials under my max wedge. I saw the red car that Hot Rod TV did a feature on and like the look of tire fitment but maybe the wheel isn't wide enough... I want as big as I can go without rub issues.

My car has a Dana 60, SS springs into the rails and did have a set of M&H Racemasters on it (7.10-15 ) on 15x8 steelies and they were rubbing the sidewall on the wheel lip.

Just thought maybe the MT Drag Radials might have a "flatter" sidewall with less of a bulge but the wheel width can add to the issue.

Anyone have any input? Thanks guys...

These are 30 x 9 x 15 Hoosier radial slicks and they fit fine in my stock wheelwell in my 63 Sport Fury. I could fit a 31" tall tire in my rear wheelwell but thats about it in the stock wheelwell. Ron

I have used both 7 and 8" wheels. The only problem with the 8" is they are offset to far out as they fit but the tires rub up inside the 1/4's when hitting bumbs with someone in the pass seat. The 7" wheels just fit better as they have plenty of room inside and outside and I believe they are 4-1/4 offset. Ron

Ok, good to know - how much was the dana narrowed? I do like those HRH wheels, too. Thanks again.

Don't let your wheel and tire choice get out of hand. tsk
When I started working on the rear suspension of my 65 Belvedere II I found a set of wheels I liked (make that had to have) along with a tall tire. I bought a set of 17" TT-2 wheels that were 17x11 with 7 1/2" backspace. They look stock from outside and would let me run almost any other wheel without a short rear. Then I found a Hoosier 17x31.5x16 tall back tire. I started doing a minitub on one side and there was just no way they were going to fit comfortably.
The holes in the center of the wheel were very large and the little 10" drums and 8 3/4 looked out of place. It ended up being back-halved with 2x3 box tubing and a Dana 60 with a 3 link Competition Engineering rear suspension and coilovers. I bought the larger Wilwood rear brakes. Yea it all looks good now but it totally busted the budget at the time.
Never again... whistling
Stick with a 7" wheel and a 30" tire and enjoy driving it... up
