Wiring problem 1969 Charger - 05/24/15 10:30 PM

I drove the Charger at night for the first time.. I noticed that when I turn my parking lights on, or my headlights, my right turn signal light on the dash comes on kind of dim.. I have all new wiring, every thing else works good,, I'm thinking something needs a ground wire, the steering column is grounded, and the engine.. Any ideas? Thanks..

My guess is a bad ground at the instrument cluster, park lights or headlight. twocents

It could be a bulb is out on the right side. I have had this happen with my older cars

I think you have a bad ground on one of your parking/signal lamp housings. I'd start with the right one and provide a temporary alligator clip ground if possible.

Reason I say that, if you look at this schematic:
http://www.mymopar.com/downloads/1969/69ChargerB.JPG

Notice that the directional/parking lamp bulb (under the 2 headlights) has a common ground for the directional filament AND the parking filament. If you lost the housing ground then the parking filament voltage will flow thru the directional filament and make its way to the directional indicator bulb in the dash (which one side is grounded) and it will glow dim because current is reduced due to the directional filament and the dash indicator filament resistances.

You can apply a GOOD temporary ground to the housings OR take an ohm meter and read from the housing to the frame etc. or better yet to the negative battery terminal. Should be close to zero ohms, certainly under 5 ohms.

Please let us know what you find.

Most of the time when that happens its either a bad bulb or bad ground on that side front parking lite. What happens is the park element of the bulb looses it ground and is looking for any ground so it backfeeds up to the turn signal bulb in the cluster and finds a ground through that bulb and causes the bulb in the cluster to lite up. It does this because insde the front bulb the park lite element and the turn signal bulb element share the same ground so it backfeeds up the turn signal circuit looking for a ground. Ron
