Drum to disc conversion - 05/03/15 01:36 PM

Hi all

I have power drums on my 72 road runner but want to upgrade to disc brakes. Which kit out there works with 14" inch front wheels? Also since I have a brake booster do I need to change that as well when changing out master cylinder or not?

Thanks

The disk upgrade can be done with OE parts from the JY and auto parts store or in kit form with OE type parts. Basics are covered in the MA link below. Dr Diff offers the parts in kit form and is good to deal with IMO. The upgrade can be done with your current spindles or (better) with later 70's spindles which take bigger bearings. There are lots of upgrades beyond stock, but the stock parts work quite well, especially with 14" wheels.

I believe your current booster with new master will be OK with OE front calipers which have generous piston area. Some aftermarket calipers have smaller piston area and need more boost pressure.

I converted my 71 to discs, and used factory stuff. One thing that gives you is it all bolts together, and when you need a part you don't have to remember what other kind of car it came off of like some of the kits. Also remember to get a good combination valve. Another place to look is The Ram Man. He has info videos on his web site.

FMJ spindles and 10.87" rotors. Inexpensive and readily available.

Pay no attention to the warning in the MA article. I use only FMJ's on my cars now.

Simple to swap.
