360 Magnum rear main seal help - 04/18/15 02:10 AM

Does anyone know what the 2 black pieces that came with my seal are for? And does the thicker inner part of the seal face toward the inner part of the motor?
It's a superformance seal kit from Hughes- but no instructions!

Probably the side deals for the rear main cap since you can't change the main without pulling the main cap

And they would go where- I have a manual but doesn't say anything about them.

The thickest part of the seal will face towards the front of the engine. Not sure what the black pieces are, never seem them before. Changed the rear main in my 01 ram and they weren't in my felpro kit.

That's the only style seal I could get to stop my 408 rear main from leaking. Don't remember the black pieces though. Don't line the seal up with the cap, offset the ends slightly when you install. Call Hughes and ask about the small pieces.

Here are the seals that I used on my 340. The ends stick out past the cap and you cut them off. That's where you are supposed to stick your black pieces, under the cap.

The 2 black rubber pieces are for sealing the main cap to block surface. They are installed into the grooves on the main cap on "Pre Magnum" LA Series blocks. There is also a left and a right, the main cap seals are NOT identical and therefore one is marked with white ink.

As for the orientation of the shaft seal. As with any other rear main seal be it Ferd, Chebby or Mercedes the thicker "Primary Seal Lip" always goes toward the oil side of the motor.
In your picture the right side is the oil side and the left is air side. The thin seal lip is a dirt exclusion lip.

Lubricate the seal well with engine assembly lube. You can offset the seal a 1/8" or so to help with alignment of the two seal halves. Do Not excessively offset the seal. Do Not use any sealers on the rear main seal itself!!!

You can always contact the Manufacturer for expert advise if you have questions on installation. They have a website with email, a facebook page, a Toll Free number and are more than happy to help with your questions smile

Anyone have an update on these Superformance rear main kits?

I have to do the rear main seal in my '79 Power Wagon, and have had nothing but trouble with past 360 in getting it leak free. Don't want to do this more than once.

Thank you.

I would put some cement in the wide groove on the bottom half moon of the #5 main cap then install the black seal then some cement on top of it. I would trim the curved two piece(s) of the side cork gasket(s) where they curve around to meet the black seal. I like to trim the cork ends so they just overlap the tapered ends of the black seal. (eyeball it & you want the "layers" where they meet to be pretty even. Also pound the pan side rails to level/even them as (if) need be. I would put an extra dab of sealant right where the cork/black rubber interface is. #1 mock up the pan with gaskets & get it looking correct then use the cement & evenly snug the pan side to side (dont overtorque). clean all surfaces first. EDIT If you are going to dissassemble to get to the actual rear main seal (that you mentioned) I would put some sealer under the seal on both halves & offset it slightly and a dab on the ends where the two halves meet.

Thank you Robert.

I'm not feeling real confident on that four peace Superformance one right now, although they supposedly have quality stuff.

Just called Superformance and found out they outsourced the rear main seal kit and no longer have a supplier.

Still have all their in-house gaskets for Mopars though.
