440 valve to piston clearance question - 01/14/09 11:43 AM

I have a low-mileage '73 440 out of a motorhome that I am going to put in my '71 Charger. It has flat-top pistons with no valve reliefs, and does anyone know what camshaft lift I can expect to be able to safely run in this setup? I was also thinking of milling the heads to get more compression, which of course will limit clearance further.

A 73 440 will have the pistons about a 1/2 mile down in the hole. Okay actual is more like .170-.180 in the hole. You are not going to have trouble with valve clearance. Unless you want a total pig of a 440 on the street, don't pick a cam with more than 224* of duration @050 on the intake side.

Excellent point, between having low comp and no quench, a big cam is going to not give you what you are looking for. I'd mill the heck out of the heads & fyi some 73 model year heads had hardened seats & some didn't. Or consider some better ones.

we have basicaly the same setup but I will be running 906 heads that have been cut .030 My motor is out of a 72 motor home.. Stock bottom end..

I am going wiht the HL285 from Comp... And it will also depend on convertor, carb and gear. This is going in my 2600lb dart...

If you want to build alittle more cylinder pressure and gain some torque you may want to look at one of our WhipLash cams.
