Thermo quad Help Needed - 03/26/15 03:30 AM

I'm reassembling my 1972 Thermoquad and I'm not sure where the aprox. 3/8" Diameter OD and 1/4" Diameter ID cork gasket that came in the rebuild kit goes. I do have one sitting on the bench that I took off so I know it's needed but can't remember where it came off from. This is NOT the black rubber orings that go in the plastic body, I do have those and know where they go. Anybody know where this one cork gasket goes? Thanks

Here is a pic of the kit. The gasket I'm looking for help with is the round cork one just below the blue accelerator pump ring. Thanks

Thanks for the replies, not sure where the Idle compensator is in the diagrams. Is it in the exploded view? where on the carb is it located? Thanks

I was thinking it (idle compensator) was a bimetallic strip (maybe two) that warps (opens) a bit when hot to add more air but I dont remember where it was for sure but maybe right above the venturis between the 2 barrels. Does that jog your memory?

How about under the fuel inlet.

It's way too small to be for the fuel inlet. The larger black ring to the right of it is for that.

Where is the "Idle compensator" in the diagrams? The Factory Service Manual mentions it, refers to fig.5 but must be some sort of misprint because it's not in the fig.5 it refers to and I can't find it in any other diagrams in the FSM. Is it in the exploded parts view? Does anyone know where on the carb it is located? Thanks

With some thought now I dont remember seeing the flat thin strip on TQ's like it was on some other carters. I'm thinking the IC was a triangular nipple bolted in on the side of the carb with (3) mini screws up at tha air horn level & has a hose to it

I don't think my carb has an "Idle Compensator" I'm thinking that maybe someone rebuilt this carb some time before me and used this cork gasket where it doesn't belong, which is why I can't figure out where it goes. I'm leaning toward the thought that it MAY be for an "Idle Compensator" which I don't have, so don't need this gasket. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated? Thanks
Anyone know if member here "Demonsizzler" still works on these and has a contact for him? Thanks again

I wouldn't think the chances would be good that someone put it in by mistake especially since there is one in the kit & commonly kits have extras cuz as you know any given kit covers multiple (carb) apps so likely the last person that rebuilt it would be aware of that & I wouldn't think it'd be possible to put a (extra) gasket in where it dont (obviously) belong. If I had a TQ I'd open it up for you. I'd suggest calling "the carb shop" in Eldon Missouri (Google it) & I think he'd be kind enough to ans a 2 minute question for you

Choke Housing Seal

Most likely used on later thermoquads. Never seen that part in a 72-74 thermoquad. Heck I don't even remember it in the NAPA kits I used for rebuilding early TQs but it's been a few years.

Well, I don't have a choke housing so it didn't come off of that.

I did find a web site that helped even though I didn't buy my kit from them. (very nice of them) They call themselves "The Carburetor Doctor" and the link is
http://www.carbkitsource.com/
Their response was:
"Very few Thermoquads have one, but it is the gasket for the Hot Idle Compensator. I don't know if yours would have one or not, but if it does it's a bi-metal strip near the secondary air valve. More info here:

http://www.carbkitsource.com/carbs/tech/Carter/pages/tqguide-Vaanth.html

I'm leaning toward the thought that it is the hot idle compensator gasket which my carb does not have. I think the last person in my carb placed this gasket in place of the needle /seat gasket but can't remember where I took it off from. After installing the correct needle and seat gaskets and after checking the float adjustments, one float was way different than the other so I thinking even more now that is where it came from because the thickness would alter the float level.
If anyone else has any other theory, I'm open to suggestions, Thanks
