Turn signals cut ignition?

Turn signals cut ignition? - 03/16/15 11:03 AM

I have a problem that's getting worst with my 70 Barracuda, it has had a very intermittent miss & as strange as it sounds it is mostly when I have either left or right turn signal going either at idle or highway speed it seems to cut the ignition when I use the turn signals! I'm wondering if I have either a crook earth or a poor power feed maybe? This car has run fine for years & there has been no repair or modification to the wiring in the last few years that caused this problem. The car is a factory 383 auto car that has had a Chrysler electronic ignition fitted about 10 years ago & ran perfectly fine until a couple of months ago.

Any ideas?

Aye mate, Yes that is a strange one . More info on the miss: it misses slightly all the time but gets aggravated when using the signals? If not all the time then is it at part (minimal) throttle, WOT or?. I'm thinking we gotta deal with the miss first. & I'd check the voltage drops at the coil/ecu etc and clean ALL terminals/connections & also see what your charging/running voltage is. that'll get us started

sounds like there may be some bare wires for the turn signal switch in the steering column.

I think the miss is only when the signals are on & it seams to have developed into almost an engine cut & it will do it at idle or when passing on the highway. I started cleaning terminals last night & it was a bit late to run the car when I was finished so I'll check the voltages tonight after work, Thanks

It was a new unit fitted 10 years or so ago & the car hasn't done too many miles but I'll pull the column to bits tonight & look for rubbing/bare wires, Thanks

Look at the wiring harness by the bulkhead connector also. I had the same problem with my 70 Road Runner and found that the harness had worn thru over the years and was grounding at the firewall.

I found the fuse holders were quite rusty & didn't look to be making good contact so I took them all apart cleaned & greased them as well as the bulkhead connectors & my problem seems to have gone away.

I have a car run this weekend so I'll give it a good run on Friday to make sure it is all good.

Driving home from the last trip out the car ran real bad at low revs & idle so I pulled the top of the factory AVS & found one of the floats had sunk. Easy fix as I have plenty of spares, adjusted the float level & drop, assembled carb & running well again.
