426 fuel pump question

My fuel pump quit me today and when I got it off and apart, I found one of these valves completely out of the hole and the other about to come out. My question is, should one of these be up and one down? Makes sense to me but the service manual shows them both in the same direction. Anybody been in here before?

They are check valves in and out.

yes. Intake lets it in and out lets it go out. One way check valves.

And FWIW, that doesnt look to be a Hemi pump (not a factory unit anyway).
