What is the black stuff in between floor pan panels? - 01/12/09 01:06 AM

I am in the process or replacing the floor pans in my 68 charger. Does anyone know what the black goopy stuff is that seals the seams in between the floor panels and where can I get the stuff?
Thanks,
Jason

It's called seam sealer and you can get it at any parts store. Either in a can of brush on or a caulk tube. Most of it is now white. Then you can use some spray can undercoat to cover it.

Were there different kinds of seam sealer used on the same car? Dad's 73 Challenger had a white seam sealer in the trunk and around the inner frame structure on the interior. Then it had a thick black sealer on the floorpan and wheelwell joints. The white stuff needed to be heated up with a gun to remove it. The black stuff just popped right off with a puddy knife. That stuff was brittle and wasn't pliable at all.
