Aftermarket Volt meter gauge install question - 01/11/09 09:03 PM

Ive recently purchased a triple gauge cluster for my Dart.It didnt come with instructions though How do I go about installing the Volt meter. Ive never installed one before.

Also,as far as the lights for the gauges, how can I hook those up. Can I just splice all the positive wires together and run them to a power source and do the same with the negatives and run them to a ground?

For the volt meter just find a switched 12 volt source, (you don't want it on all the time). For the postive lights, group them together and tap into the headlight circuit.
For the grounds, including the voltmeter negative group them togther and connect to a nice clean connection on the dash frame work (steel support)

You can also go to www.autometer.com ,click on the style gauge you bought, find the tab that says instructional downloads, hit download and that might help with other ?'s.

I like to run my gauge lights to the dash light fuse. That way they can be brightened and dimmed with the dash. Yes you can run all the add on gauge light wires together in pos and neg groups.

Well I got my cluster installed,Got the Temp gauge working, and the volt meter.

For the voltmeter all I did was probe around until I found a circuit that was hot when the key was on and cold when the key was off (as suggested) Grouped all the power together for the lights, ran another wire off those power wires for the + side of the volt meter and plugged it all into the power source I found.

For the negative,I did the same.Couldnt have been easier, thanks for the simple instructions.

Its no biggie, but the lights for the gauges stay on all the time when the key is on,based on how I wired it.

All I have to do now is get an oil line installation kit as this cluster I bought on Ebay is missing a few of the ferulles and nuts.

Now your voltmeter reads the load placed on your voltage source by your guage lights.

Not really optimal.

As I suggested you need to run the gauge light pos wire off the dash light fuse. That way the gauges will light with the dash lights and be adjutable with them.
