help me spend my money. efi quandry. - 02/28/15 05:54 PM

so, as some know, I had a major failure in the duster. this allows me to finally go EFI as I rebuild it.

the constraints: multiport intake, 1200cfm throttle body with GM IAC and TPS. LS1 injectors.

what im running up against now, is making a decision on engine management. it boils down to drivability for me. I don't want to screw with it. I cant tune worth a damn. its a fairly radical engine (solid roller, 12in manifold vacuum at 900rpm idle, indy heads, 3 inch exhaust, 390 at the rear wheels on pump gas)and I want it as docile and drivable as possible. it has never been this, no matter what carb and manifold I have tried. im sick of trying.

my options, really, are three:
1. ez efi retrofit kit. I can get it for 700 shipped brand new, self learning, no ignition control. spotty info on the retrofit, but mixed reviews on the full tbi style kit. I've installed a couple of the full kits, and they were a [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] to get right but were great once they were.
2. GM L98 (tuned port 350 corvette)computer and harness. cheapest of the options. I already have it all. I cant tune worth a damn, and no one I know of is still messing with them. at that point, I order a mail order tune and take my chances.
3. Megasquirt. can do anything. ever. and im almost completely on my own except for guys on the internet. no one around here will touch it.

so which management system? my gut says spend the money on the ez setup, but my cheapassness balks at that kind of cash.

up next is fuel system: two options.
1. pusher pump/surgetank/e2000 rail pump. already have this in my elky, and works flawless. little noisy. id have to put my surge tank in the trunk in this one, and run all my plumbing through the floor. don't like that. but I also already have all the pieces, so cheapest option.
2. tanks inc pa4. drop in high pressure/return module with sump tray. 225, but done, quiet, and clean.

im leaning towards the PA4, but again, my cheapassness comes into play.
lastly is plumbing. I hate the look of braided stainless/red-blue AN lines. the push lock stuff scares me at 60psi of fuel pressure. on the elky, I used push lock AN fittings with standard high pressure line and fuel injection hose clamps to make my soft lines. ugly as hell, but functional. also not cheap. id like to do something cleaner and neater here, as it will be much more visible in the engine bay and other areas. ideas?

so help me out here, guys. I really need it.

How much agony and pain due you want to endure in this process? It's your call, I wouldn't never try to do my own brain surgery or select the cheapets brain surgeon to do that Why are you wanting to do that to your ride Buy the good stuff once and learn how to use it properly

Talk to Rich at www.fastmanefi.com and follow his advice. He can get you a setup that works.

At some point your eyes get bigger than your stomach.

If it's got a bunch of cam, heads, exhaust is it reasonable that EFI could somehow transform all that into a easy going docile run some errands cruiser?

Yes.

It will not purr like a kitten but EFI can cover up some of the bad behavior of a nasty cam.

12 inches of vacuum isn't that bad. Sounds like you need somebody to help you tune it rather than throwing a bunch of money at it. The 340 in my 66 Barracuda had 10 inches of vacuum and I could practically let the clutch out at idle without killing it. It would only need a tiny bit of throttle to pull away from a dead stop. It would go down the road at 25 mph in 4th gear at 1500 rpm no problem.

I would do the Megasquirt, the correction tables and self learning would work if you are willing to spend some time with it. I would also use the wide band O2 in each header and what is the LSA of the cam? I have 112 so if I ever want to go that route, its only a manifold swap for me. Tim

I'm doing something like this as well. Mine is a 340 that made 470 crank hp and has a 227/231 @.050, 0.530 lift, 110 LSA hydraulic roller cam. I have 13.5 or so in Hg at idle, but I wouldn't even consider it that radical. Other than warm up, it's easy to deal with once the engine is warm.

I've bought the following things and am going Megasquirt3 Pro

I currently have the Aeromotive Phantom 340 for the pump in the back, 3/8 feed and return lines. going to use steel other than the short flexible ones that will be braided teflon lines. Intake is a Edelbrock Super Victor EFI, 36 lb/hr injectors, edelbrock rails, Holley 1000 cfm throttle body. All the sensors and connectors are basically for a mid 90s GM car. Will be running LSX coil near plug, 36-1 crank wheel, cut down 5.2 magnum distributor.

Megasquirt 3 Pro computer. Considering they have "VEAL" which is Volumetric efficiency analyzer live on the full version, it's basically a self-tuning system when you have the full version of the software.

For the fuel supply, tank in pump is nice. The pump runs cool, quiet and easy to package.

For the EFI, suggest you talk to Fastman EFI or somebody else about TB injection and a big cam. EFI can tame/smooth out the big cam but not sure how the TB injection will do in that application. That said, I like FAST stuff. It seems well made.

Almost all the newer setups are self learning on the AF curve so that's the way to go to cut down tuning time.

You're not *terribly* far from me, as I'm in Danvilel, VA. I'm doing a Megasquirt install on an RB. You're welcome to drive up, have a beer (or iced tea) and I can show you what I've done so far and explain anything that I know.

I second that!

Talk with Rich....he has been building and supporting Mopar EFI for years. He helped me greatly with my setup. FAST 2.0 and F&B Throttle bodies. I have been running my setup for over two years with no issues.

If I can give any advice it would be to use a cam designed for efi and find a good tuner. I went through a lot of pains when I first built this 15 years ago because there wasn't any good (really nonexistent) support in the industry at the time. A good tuner will also help you in your choice of ecu's, as some of the more advanced and expensive systems may have more bells and whistles than you will ever need. Lucky for you, there are now a ton of choices in regards to ECU's, cams, intakes and tuners now. I eventually swapped over to an Accel Gen VII, swapped the cam and simplified the ignition system. Once you have efi and it's properly tuned there is no going back. sorry for the crappy pic, I was still using kodac disposable cameras back then lol.
