Not sure about the proper part but I always ground the mounting flange and put power to it so a second or 2. That's how they operate so I cant see it hurting one and have never damaged one to my knowledge, of course I live in the woods so I'm sure there's a better way and soemone will tell me I'm nuts.

I have always tested them through a car battery by grounding the bracket on the negative post then run a wire off the terminal of the horn to tap on the positive side. I can't say that I ever "hurt" one long term either by doing it this way but it's fast and simple...

I have tested several the way described in posts and they sound off once and that's it, So I thought they probably were getting to much current being hooked direct to a battery without going thru a relay or something?

Horns are 12 volt so connect to a battery as stated. Won't hurt them. A relay is just a switching device.

If your horns have a mini trimmer knob on the case, you can turn it SLIGHTLY CW then back to where it was, then SLIGHTLY CCW, then back to where it was (originally) & this will alot of times improve the sound quality. I'm assuming your sound (as is) ain't up to snuff

Are horns fixable if they stop working?? I will try above technique to see if it fixes any THANKS

OK, you have a completely dead one. Try the knob & if no go then it has to be opened up but maybe go a bit further either way from dead center (~1/16 of a turn max maybe) but be conservative with it first. As said make sure the bare metal on the case is grounded then jump fire to the terminal. I'm thinking the knob wont fix a dead one but see what happens. it has restored a good sound on one that the tone is off. Do ya feel lucky? well do ya

Exactly.
you will also find out that there is a "LO" and a "HI" toned horn in the set. This is one of the most annoying procedures you will experience. I suggest earplugs and some where alone. You make a lot of noise if you don't get em adjusted quickly.

If my cat is stuck to ceiling in the garage after a brief toot, they're good.
I use a wire with a 10 amp fuse from a car battery as power and my Power Probe to trigger the factory relay.

I've sprayed PB blaster in the adjuster hole on a few horns that started to act up and got more life out of them...
