Was tinted glass an option in 70 if the car had no AC? - 02/28/15 12:19 AM

Car in question is a 70 Swinger 340. The car has tinted glass all around YET it does not have AC.
So was it an option?

Never saw a car in the '60s or '70s that didn't have a tinted glass option.

All our cars had tinted glass, even the '52 Buick.

Clear glass was standard, even on AC cars.

Tinted glass was recommended with AC, but it was an extra cost option, with or without AC. See the page at http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/dealerships/DealershipDataBook/1970/70_Dart0020.jpg

How many cars back in the day were actually ordered a certain way with X amount of options? Can't say as I remember seeing any AC cars that didn't have tint although obviously they exist
I would think that much like today the factory built the largest percentage however they wanted to send them out. Maybe automatically adding tint combined with AC. again...
Nowadays most people just pick something from a lot and go not realizing you can order and pay for only the items you want if your willing to wait about 6 weeks...

I have a Plum Crazy 1970 Charger RT/SE with tinted glass. The build sheet has the codes for the windshield and other glass on it. It is a six pack car, so no AC was available.

Unh huh.

The factory builds the cars to dealers orders. The dealers know what will sell and order accordingly.
Sometimes the dealer's order guy would have a bad day or be colorblind or something and would order interiors and exteriors that didn't work well together. Chrysler had a list of color combinations that didn't work well and would usually check to make sure, at least that's what the experts that I've read say.

In those days a lot of things could be ordered on the vehicle even when not listed as option on said vehicle ordered for. You just had to pull the right strings.

If you can provide any proof for this statement, please do!

for example - GG's "1970 'Cuda book" shows:

* 16,710 US Spec. 'Cuda hardtops (BS23) at $3,164.00
** 2,072 with Air/Conditioning (H51) at $357.65
** 4,946 with tinted glass - ALL (G11) at $32.75
** 4,729 with tinted windshield (G15) at $20.40

..... and by 1970, if you ordered H51 "air conditioning" Chrysler would automatically add G11 "tinted glass - ALL" to your order unless you specifically NOTED G21 "clear glass" on the order form.

Chrysler and/or the dealer did not want to get stuck with a mistake: "OH, I thought that was included!" or "I forgot to check that box!" or "The salesman messed up, how do we fix this?".

Many Superbirds came from the factory with tinted glass and A/C was NOT an available option

The birds with tinted glass are coded for it and when optioned that way All glass was tinted except the rear window
