340 valve covers - 02/14/15 07:31 AM

I picked up this set of 340 valve covers recently and was curious if they were amatched set or what they were from originally. Im better with the big block stuff when it comes to valve cover i.d.

Even among 340's, the covers vary from year to year, and 340's could have subtle differences compared to 318's. If these are for a '70, you'd need someone expert with them. I'm more familiar with '68 & '69. What you have looks to be a matched set, but I couldn't tell if they are 318, or even later year 70's covers painted orange.

I got them with a pair of X heads and the guy was certain he pulled them from a 69 Dart back in the 80's wearing these covers. I wasnt sure.

How tall is the wire bracket on the top cover?

His story as he remembered may be true, but those are not correct for a 69 340 (or 318). They look to me to be '70-71 period, not sure about engine size. Edit, maybe they are '70? I think '71 had the twist cap oil fill rather than the push on breather???

There defiantly not 71's, these are 71 and correct for 70 also I think.

These were also correct on a 71, but this style appeared on blue engine cars (when the engine plant change from Windsor to Mound Road occurred in the spring of 71).

The twist on oil cap started in 1970. I have a couple sets of 69 340 covers and they are all turquoise. I will have to take a picture and post.

It was actually Coco Crisp, and it is 8 degrees outside with 40 mph wind, so I might not go over to the shop today... And.....they look ORANGE underneath...

Take your and stuff it!

They were just used to mask the valve gear on some heads that got painted orange, that's just over spray.....Still wearing original turquoise paint.

Well this makes it look more like the OP's covers could possibly be '69. The rear of the driver side cover is bent, and the curved bracket may also just be bent instead of straight. Need a better picture of the intake manifold side of the passenger cover to see if it has the right wire loom. They would have been turquoise originally, but maybe they were stripped before orange paint.

Can't see the bottom side of the bottom valve cover in the first photo, but the covers look to be almost the same as these 69 340 covers. My engine was built early, 11/1/68.

Only small difference I can spot is the tall vertical bracket at lower right in this photo looks to be 180 degrees different from the OP's photo. Either way would work.
