67 Satellite Tach problem

67 Satellite Tach problem - 02/02/15 01:15 AM

I have a 1967 Satellite with console mounted tach that won't work. All wiring has been checked for connections etc. but still no go. I have put in a new complete electronic ignition system to replace the old points and condenser system (including distributor). I am wondering if this tach will not work on the electronic ignition. Pretty sure this tach was working.

Need (1) switched 12V to power it (2) black wire to ground (3) sense wire to coil neg primary post (same for points or electronic (black/yellow wire on the pentastar ECU pigtail for electronic). (4) another wire for the front face light. if 1 2 & 3 are OK then the tach is shot. EDIT I am assuming not MSD

Thanks for reply. I have the full Mopar shop manual for this car and wiring diagram shows 4 wires from the tach exactly like mine. Black to ground (tested fine), Orange to light- works, Dark green to positive side of coil - done and tested for contact, Violet goes to a Violet with white tracer line on console wiring - it is the 12V power and is working.

You say the wire should be on the negative side of the coil not the positive?????

This may be a dumb question but how does the tach pick up an ignition pulse on the positive side of the coil. I thought it had to read this from the points. As you say, the points are connected to the negative side so maybe the factory wiring diagram is wrong.

This is a factory correct tach, purchased from a fellow who dismantled the same car and he said it was working. I am restoring this car and adding as a factory option so was wiring it as per the shop manual.

Absolutely (on the neg side). Not sure if it being on the positive side would fubar a good tach or render it (temporarily) inop (till you switch it back correct/I wouldn't think so but I ain't sure) but change the wire to the neg post (your only option) & see what you get. If all (3) terminals are being fed/have continuity then the tach is bad. EDIT there are no dumb Q's, the points or ECU make/break continuity of the pri circuit to ground & that is the "signal" that is picked up/counted & converted to RPM in the tach (more pulses=higher RPM)

Also note, some of the 66 or 67 console mounted tachs have a seperate
unit that goes with it. In other words , it's a two part deal .It's a round disc shapped sending unit if I remember correct.
This may or may not be true on the '67 , just thought I would throw that out there .

Tach signal pickup is always on the negative side of the coil because the positive side is a constant 12v. The negative side is the make and break signal side which is what the tach reads.

Greg that may very well be the (missing) piece that is making it inop

I thought only the 66 tach's had the separate sending unit and the 67's were inside the tach?

Re: 67 Satellite Tach problem - 02/03/15 04:19 PM

Hey guys thanks for all the input on this issuse. Bought this tach from a guy who specializes in 66/67 Satellite only restorations. He has about 8 of them now so I would assume he knows a bit about them LOL. He told me a 66 tach was a 3 wire and needed another sensor in order to work, however the 67 tach had 4 wires and did not need the sensor. Mine is a factory correct 4 wire.

When I seen the wiring diagram I thought it strange the green wire was to the positive side but who argues with the shop manual. I will try the negative side as I also believe it should be there to pick up the pulse from the points or ECU. Will try this likely tomorrow and see what happens.

Thanks for all your help guys and will let you know.

Re: 67 Satellite Tach problem - 02/03/15 06:35 PM

There was a PBA break in 1967 for the tach the early 67 had a external sending unit the latter 67 had an internal sending unit.

I understand the external had 3 wires and an internal had 4 wires. will see when I test it. Thanks for input though.

Re: 67 Satellite Tach problem - FIXED THANKS - 02/04/15 01:38 AM

Hi everyone. Appreciation to all of you and all the responses. It was the dark green wire from the tach to the coil. The shop manual said connect to positive post which is wrong. Connected to the negative terminal and it works fine. So no need for separate sensor with this one (4 wire). Great response to the post - great forum. thanks.

You changed 1 wire/problem solved, that was too easy

DAH should have figured it out all my myself but was concerned about popping the guts out of the tach. Yep simple fix. Who would have thunked the shop manual could be wrong. Just nice to see it work cause I was not looking forward to the cost of rebuilding it. Thanks again everyone.
