Detroit area sandblast/paint stripping recommendation - 01/26/15 11:00 PM

I could use a recommendation or two on where to take my car to have the paint stripped or blasted off in the Detroit area. Obviously looking for someone who will do a good job for a fair price. Thanks.

I haven't been there for awhile, but I think it was International Paint Stripping in Romulus 734-942-0500. They did a good job and charged a fair price. There's also $ American $ Metal $ Cleaning $ in Toledo if your checkbook is full! Great work at a not so great price.

International paint strip is a good chemical stripper at a fair price as stated by another responder. However, I would not chemically strip doors, hoods, or other components that have welded panels and little nooks and crannies. A buddy of mine ruined a set of clean Arizona doors because once the doors were cleaned and neutralized, the doors kept leeching the chemical stripper out of the seams and continuously ate the paint off of the bottom of the doors. It is difficult to get the stripper neutralized in confined areas so be cautious. But, for control arms, differentials, cylinder heads....solid pieces, etc. International Paint Strip does a good job and turn around time is pretty good too. There is a bead blaster (if you are stripping a complete body, doors, hood) in the Grosebeck & 15 mile area of Clinton Township called "Strip It All". They supposedly do a nice job also but, that statement is word of mouth. Not sure about pricing.

Another option is George's Collision on 9 or 10(?) mile between Gratiot and Harper, they can blast/strip a complete car if needed.

George's shop completed the media blast phase on my 1970 Coronet R/T restoration. They also cleaned various large parts that the restoration shop could not handle. Pricing was not bad. Please send me a PM, if need more info.

SS Stripping is a great place to trust with your project. I have used one of the others mentioned in the past and ended up with warped panels. Cheap is not always better so be carefull! Fixing warped panels is not cheap. SS in Sterling Heights is always our first choice.

I've used international with no issue. 3 different cars, one is still bare (way to long and looks ok), One in primer 4 years, ok, one finished 3 years, looks perfect. Don't do trunks or hoods because of the inner panel sealing glue. If you do have a "fat" seam on a panel, pry it apart before sending it. Then put Pour-15 in the seam and tap it back down when the part returns.
