Dash Meets Firewall and Windshield

Dash Meets Firewall and Windshield - 01/09/09 02:35 PM

I'm going to replace my windshield on my 1970 Satellite and when I do, I'm going to replace the dash board...the whole unit that includes the framework of the entire dash. My question is this: I've never done this before and am wondering if the dash unit attaches to the firewall where the windshields sits on it by bolts or is it welded? Am I going to have to cut it and reweld or will it come unbolted? Have any of you ever done that before and if so, how much of a royal pain is it? Any other suggestions are appreciated (like "label all your wiring" or "you will or won't have to remove the steering column" etc.) Thanks! Chris.

If its anything like a 70 Charger you will have about 8 bolts where the windshield meets the dash frame, the 2 bolts down by the kick panels (one on each side) Thats all thats really holding it in. You might have a rod with eyelots around the steering column joining it to the steering brace.

They are bolted in with keps nuts/retainers. Its not that bad....Probably the worst part of it all is dealing with the wiring nightmare when you diconnect it all but with a service diagram and good labeling you'll be okay. I did the dash removal three times and three times they went back in okay (except my 69, I had to custom make a wiring harness with my own solid color wiring scheme and soldering everything instead of those factory crimping methods)

It's held on by bolts. There are 7 or 8 at the dash/windshield seam and then 1 or 2 under the dash at the sides. Once you have the windshield removed, it's very easy to do.

You will need to drop the steering column also.

These are basic instructions, not specific to this model.

Pull the kick panels, there is a bolt on each side.
Remove the steering column.
Disconnect the firewall bulkhead on both sides, and the wiring harness underneath that goes back.
Disconnect the heater control cables from the box.
Disconnect the defroster hoses.
Disconnect the antenna from the radio.
Remove the windshield.
Put a few blankets over the console and/or seats.
Loosen but don't remove the side bolts.
Remove the bolts at the top of the instrument panel.
With a helper, tilt down the panel, lift off of the side bolts and remove panel. Make sure nothing else is connected while doing this.

Don't forget to change the VIN tag.
