Hemi mushroom lifters - 01/23/15 01:53 AM

Is anyone making mushroom Hemi lifters anymore? Can they be used in a 440 or small block?

With the advances in roller lifters, why would you want to go to mushroom lifters? Just curious.

The only reason to use mushroom lifters, beyond some kind of restoration of a race car, would be to allow more extreme lifter acceleration, to get more area under the lift curve. However, I would think one could get a very similar acceleration rate using a hydraulic or solid roller. Add to this, one needs a cam grind specifically designed to make use of the mushroom lifter's capabilities. Any mushroom cam lobe is at least 30 years old and there has been a lot of improvement to cam lobes during that time.

But to answer your question, I do not believe anyone is making them and yes they would work in pretty much all blocks if the bottom of the bores were spotfaced if necessary for clearance.

Thanks for your reply. I'm looking at using these with a solid cam, yes I understand cam technology has improved greatly over the last 30 years or so. I know this would lead to a faster lift rate, giving a much crisper sound as well. This would also increase the over all duration as well wouldn't it?, on top of an already fat cam that you may have, so to speak.

I'm thinking of making a set for my 440, if there is any interest in these type of lifters add a comment below, I'm curious as to how much interest there might be for them.

My point was, you MUST have a cam ground with a lobe that takes advantage of the larger diameter lifter foot. You can certainly put them on any solid lifter cam and they'll work JUST LIKE A REGULAR flat tappet.

My other point was, as cam grinders haven't been feeding the mushroom lifter need for several decades, all mushroom lifter grinds are apt to be behind the times.

A third point is, mushroom lifters were a crutch for racing classes that didn't allow roller lifters. If the classes had allowed rollers, the mushrooms would have been gone in a heartbeat.
