awesome car. what's your budget? Do a 318 stroker

Use an 86 or later block, factory roller lifters, nice cam...

Right now I am working on my 1970 Roadrunner. So it will take a while to get to my Barracuda. I am looking for 318 motor and put it in and drive it around til I am ready to restore it. I was thinking maybe spend $15000 on it.

J81-Rear Spoiler (Gull Wing)
C26-Roof Console
J78-Front Spoiler
A21-Elastomeic/Color Front Bumper
A45- Spoiler Package F&R very RARE on a non-'Cuda
FE5-Rally Red
J54-Rally Hood RARE on a non-'Cuda
E44-318

With the documentation you have & it's rarity (combined with the fact that it survived 44 years without being robbed of parts or already "cloned" into a HEMI'Cuda) - leave it a GRAN COUPE. If you "need" more power - stay small block!

Got tag & sheet pics?

Does it look like the RED grill has always been there?

Very well optioned. It is always cool to see a 318 car that is still a 318 car.

If you can fix any safety issues & get it running reliably, it would draw a lot of attention at any show just the way it is.

I agree!! Sometimes it's very cool to see the more pedestrian cars. Not that this one is, it's quite the opposite! See, I love seeing ordered cars because they reflect the personality of the original owner. In this case, somebody wanted to be a Flash Harry, but either didn't want a gas guzzler or didn't street race.

I have a pair of AMC Hornets. One a powder blue six, the other a bright yellow V8/stick car. (One Mild, One Wild)

The blue Six gets more attention. Drives me insane!

Personally I'd clone it into a 440/6 or HEMICUDA...but it's YOUR car, to do as YOU please

If the original engine is long gone, build a 340 or 360 for it. Make sure to dress it out to look like a 318.

Re: 1971 Barracuda Gran Coupe - 01/23/15 12:33 AM

I do, but I own four cars with 318s & one with a /6.

I was actually disappointed when I found out the /6 car did not have the original engine.

Manual steering & black wheels w/"dog dish" hub caps - odd duck for sure!

Do you have a picture of the interior - I don't think I've ever seen a '71 Gran Coupe ONLY "credit OPTION" vinyl interior P6X9.

Re: 1971 Barracuda Gran Coupe - 01/24/15 01:34 AM

Nice score...I'd make it as close to the buildsheet as possible with a few liberties where you would'nt notice like the smallblock engine improvement discussed...

Kinda reminds me of this rarity . . .

No A/C, either. The original owner must have spent everything he had on appearance options. I agree with the others. Keep it stock appearing under the hood. It's kind of like an E-body version of a Twister or Sizzler. Very cool.

Hey Dan, What does "credit option" actually mean please. Would a P6** interior be the top of the line for interiors for a 1971 Gran Coupe.......

By the way bltcuda1972 (brad), what an awesome Gran Coupe you have. Keep it all stock and tickle up any size small block you want but still give the illusion that it is all original. Very nice car.

I like this idea too.
Keep it as close to the factory build/look as possible.
Congrats on the find!

Meah, put a big block in it and beat it like a red headed step child

Re: 1971 Barracuda Gran Coupe - 01/24/15 04:29 PM

You could even go as far as to modify the factory 318 2bbl air cleaner to accept the 4bbl.

I'll let Dan correct me if I goof, but the leather and vinyl seats were standard for the Gran Coupe, with cloth as a no-cost option. If you wanted vinyl, they had it as a credit option, meaning since you weren't opting for the leather, they would give you some money back since the leather was factored into the price.

And if I'm correct, the vinyl seats were the GFC were fancier than those found on the Barracuda and 'Cuda.

So would the P6** interior be classed as better or equal to the leather interior then.

Hi Brad (bltcuda1972),

Can you post up more pictures of your Gran Coupe please, i really like it a lot.
Something about 70 and 71 Gran Coupes are so appealing and yet so very cool with some one off options.
Posted By: 6bblgt

Re: 1971 Barracuda Gran Coupe - 01/26/15 07:19 AM

1970 & '71 Gran Coupes had leather & vinyl bucket seat interiors STANDARD.

If you ordered the all vinyl (Gran Coupe specific) or cloth & vinyl, you received a (48.25) CREDIT on your window sticker in '70

If you ordered the all vinyl (Gran Coupe specific) or cloth & vinyl, you received a (44.40) CREDIT on your window sticker in '71

IMO a lesser cost "all vinyl" or "cloth & vinyl" interior is a lesser OPTION in a Gran Coupe, but at this point I don't think they'd affect the value of a finished car. (they do look cool & are considerably "RARER")

Re: 1971 Barracuda Gran Coupe - 01/26/15 07:28 AM

Thanks for that clarification Dan

I think the P6** interiors are pretty darn cool myself also.

This is the back seat upper portion of what came in my Brothers 71 Gran Coupe, it was the only factory part left in his car, it is P6B5 interior car.
Have a look how dark the Blues are on it.

Congrats on a great score. I really like that car!!
We brought a 70 convertible /6 barracuda mostly original paint, steel wheel car and a 71 Hemi Cuda Clone Ragtop to Carlisle the same year. The /6 got way more attention. My brother drove the ragtop down to Carlisle and I trailered the Hemi. It would be refreshing to see that beauty stay pretty much like it was born.

Re: 1971 Barracuda Gran Coupe - 01/26/15 04:47 PM

Are you selling it or keeping it? If I were keeping it I would put in a hot 340, drop it a little with good suspension parts and beat on it.. Selling, respray, big block..
Posted By: EV2CUDA

Re: 1971 Barracuda Gran Coupe - 01/26/15 10:37 PM

I would put in a stroked 360
I also have a 71 barracuda with f and r spoilers, ralley hood and rear window louvers.

Re: 1971 Barracuda Gran Coupe - 01/26/15 11:24 PM

The second picture of the seats is what was in my 70 Gran Coupe. Black door panels with the red inlay...black seats with red piping and the hounds tooth material in center made for a great looking interior. Man I wish I would have kept that car...

Re: 1971 Barracuda Gran Coupe - 01/27/15 05:43 PM

Great Car !!! Most definetly keep it small block . . . my 70 Sport Satellite was originally a 318 car, however the original engine was LONG gone when I got the car . . . I built a 360 and 727 for it. Kept everything looking same as 318 . . .

Attached picture 8409536-EngineinCar.jpg

Re: 1971 Barracuda Gran Coupe - 01/27/15 05:48 PM

BTW . . . look for exhaust manifolds from 71(??)-73 Road Runner with 318. They look EXACTLY like regular 318 manifolds, but have the port sizes for the larger 340/360 !! As well, the pass side is not drilled out for heat riser valve !! I don't have a pic of them on this computer, but they also have "318 RR" stamped on them !! Great way to let the bigger engine breathe, but still have things looking 318 stock !!

The cloth insert in the seats is AWESOME !!! Here is what I did on my Sport Satellite . . . yes, the car came from factory with the 6way manual adjust drivers seat - and the knobs were one black and one chrome !!

Cheers

Mark

PS - Make the car for YOU !!! It is yours !!

Re: 1971 Barracuda Gran Coupe - 01/27/15 05:51 PM

mymcodebee - What I do is salvage old barn and sell the lumber and I notice Cuda and Challenger is down the hill that no one notice it from the road. And I was lucky and brought it but he gave me Challenger free because it so rusty and missing a lot of parts. You can look it up under E-bodies parts for sale.
I will send another pix where I found the way it is.

Re: 1971 Barracuda Gran Coupe - 01/27/15 05:54 PM

a12rag - Nice car. I bet you get a lot of attention from car show?? Yes I will restored it back to factory 318. The vinyl seat was cool too but I look it up to buy new cover and it cost about over $1000
Posted By: a12rag

Re: 1971 Barracuda Gran Coupe - 01/27/15 08:59 PM

Bltcuda72 . . . I got the cloth insert fabric, from SMS in Oregon. I got way more than I needed, so spent more than I should have, then there was the Legendary Interior at $1k and then having the shop redo the seats, change out the vinyl insert for the cloth . . . Don't even ASK how much $$$$ is wrapped up in the seats in the Sport Satellite !!!!. . . Ugghhh, but in the end, (which is what really sits on the seats) it was worth it !! ha ha ha . . . Yes the FC7 "In-Violet" color gets way noticed !!

Your car will get WAYYYYY noticed, because it IS NOT the hemi 4spd clone . . . love to see the "regular" cars getting thier do. After all, not every car sold back then, was a Hemi, or big block car. And, with cost of fuel these days (ok, it has come down TONS, but when it was higher), it is great to be able to drive your car wherever and whenever you want !!!

Good find and good luck with it !!! Keep the updates coming !!!

Cheers,

Mark
