72 360 head ID - 01/17/15 08:18 PM

I have a 72 motorhome 360, 2 barrel. The casting number on the heads is 34189156. I found the number 3418915, which says it's a 71-2 360 head, but I can't find any with the extra 6 on the end. Would these be "j" heads? Thanks.

Its hard to tell, as the engine is still together. It probably is. It's in a shed, so it's kinda difficult to get to.

Probably just a J head with 1.88 intake valves

Yep, 915 J heads. Note the big "J" in the casting below; there should also be one on the outside between the spark plug holes. Don't be surprised if they're cracked.

Yeah, it's a "magical" J head, pull'em and sell to some fool who thinks they are trick. They were used on 340s back in the day, so they have street cred. The fact that Mopar engines many times used exact same components across the performance range seems to have escaped the hoi polloi.

The 915 castings can be J, O, U or Z heads, the letter itself means nothing.

And the 915 casting can have 2.02 or 1.88" intake valves, the number means little in and of itself.

They can also be T/A heads.

The 915s were pretty popular.

And if they had an "X" on them people lose their minds. They open their wallets and send all logic and reason out the window.

They are going to be used on my 408 project, at least until I can afford some aluminum heads. I will put the 2.02 valves in them.

I believe there are several articles floating around on productive modifications to the intake ports and it is possible to get 250cfm from them with basic porting.

I'd more suggest you use the $ you would have spent on the larger valves and put it towards porting and a competition valve job. There's more hp in that.

If I am remembering right I have a "I" head and a "II" head on my 360 at least between the spark plugs. Regular big J underneath both.

What do you want more low end torque or top end. If you want more low end I know some circle track guys that have gone back to the 1.88 valve over the 2.02 and have gained a lot of low end coming out of the turns. Personally I switched from 1.88 to 2.02 and gained absolutely nothing when I had my duster. Both set had the same cut to the same CC other than that were in stock form.

It's going to be a mostly street but occasionally strip car. I want it (68 Dart) to be able to take down a 69 Skylark with a 455... So I'm looking at low 12s high 11s. I want it on the edge of being legal without a cage. At this point, it's all in the planning stage. Thanks guys!
