98 ram 1500 speed sensor question. - 01/01/15 08:03 PM

My 98 1500 keeps throwing a code for the output speed sensor. I have changed the one in the rear end housing, cleaned it out and put fresh gear lube in it. Still puts the check engine light on. Any ideas? ) I should mention the speedo is working fine. Truck has about 150 k miles.

perhaps the "output speed sensor" on the tailshaft of the trans.

If I remember correctly, the OSS is on the tail-end of the (automatic) transmission.

As a test, you can swap the ISS (Input Speed Sensor) with the OSS (Output Speed Sensor). If the fault moves from OSS to ISS you have a bad sensor. If the fault remains the OSS you may need to look at the OSS wiring.

From what I remember that wont work as the threads are different on them. But what trans do you have the 46RE or is it a Hemi with the 45RFE ? The 46RE has a speed sensor in the overdrive housing thats just for the gov so the PCM knows the driveshaft road speed and it usually will shift funny when it goes bad since the PCM calculates gov pressure by it. The 46RE has no input sensor as it just controls gov pressure electronically. If its the 45RFE then it uses the input and output sensors so the controller knows the input shaft speed and the output shaft speed to control the solenoids for the electronic shift opperation as it needs to know eng rpm and input shaft speed rpm to calculte it with output shaft rpm to know when to shift. No Hemi's in 98.... and NO input speed sensor on a 46RE trans which this truck will have...

Yea I been out of the dealer since 2011 and forgot what year the Hemi came on board. Has to do with old age or something. Ron

Keep thinking I should send you my old Autometer shift light.... I know you're going to forget to shift soon!

Now that is funny. As I dont have shift lite on my tach and 99% of the time I race I just shift by the sound and pull of the eng. Even with a tach I usually dont look at it when I shift as I normally will just look at the tach in the traps and on the line.

You know I loved working as a tech all my life and for 24 years in the Dodge dealer I did my best to stay on top of all the Mopar tecnology and trying to be real good at what I did. But to be honest I dont miss the dealer hassle one bit as I said I loved what I did but I hated the politics of the pay system. And I dont have to worry about trying to know all the latest technology on the new Mopars. Its was a challenge staying on top of everything but its kinda a relief to not worry about it so much anymore. Ron
