Did all 69 440 blocks have machined serial number pad - 12/21/14 11:51 PM

I have a 440 block that looks like a 68 with unmachined pad.
It has a full 69 C-body serial number stamped here

I would look for other early (July '68) assembled '69 model year blocks & ask:

When did Chrysler start machining the VIN pad, or did this one just get missed?

IMO, looks like:
cast - 4*2*68 (Tuesday)

EAD: E 440 7 25 2
engine assembly date - 7 25 (68) 2nd shift (Thursday)

Winner , I think I have seen a couple of 69 blocks like this.

To me the giveaway that this is early 69 production is the FULL vin , definitely a 68 casting and the block sat around before getting used for whatever reason including bad inventory control.

It looks like an E to me also.

I think you have it right on Dan...
I would be curious also as to when they started to machine the pad.
Just that I never seen the number stamped not on the recessed pad but since John has, we have an answer.

I don't know

But remember this , 69 model year assembly was schedule to start on 8/1/68 , this engine was assembled 6 days before that. I imagine that 68 model year production had already stopped, the only reason it would be a D is because the guy stamping it goofed, and it may have an E stamped over the D????

All I know is that 4-2-68 was my 10th birthday! Looks to me like an E to me too. Interesting thing would be to find out when they did start machining the pad, might be a left-over block that was supposed to be used for a 68 model car but was in the back of the queue when the 69 model year started.

At regular scale, it looks like an E. However, if you blow it up, you can definitely see curves on both the top and bottom. That seals the deal for me.......

If the pad weren't all pitted with rust in that area AND the block didn't have a 1969 VIN on it ....

Re: Did all 69 440 blocks have machined serial number pad - 12/22/14 07:12 AM

The 7 after the casting number I believe is the casting mold or mould number for this block. I have seen 6 7 8 10, was there 1 2 3 4 5 and 9. Was there any numbers after 10. Makes you wonder if Chrysler did this on any other blocks such as Hemis, 383s between the 1968 to 1969 build. Hemi might of been a little more tighter on when they were build and assembled, but this is Chrysler after all and anything goes. Love to see an early HP 440 motor from 1969 with no machined pad and a serial number on it and people start saying the block was restamped. Good stuff Mccannix.
