alterkation - 01/07/09 01:40 AM

has anyone on here done this swap with a alterkation front end and either a new 5.7 or 6.4 hemi into a b-body? any issues? like how well does the shifter line up? which tranny to use? did you wire it so you can use the stock guages? I'm considering this swap in the near future is the reason why i'm askin....

There's lots of info on this topic here on Moparts (use the search function) and on the bigblockdart.com board. I was convinced to do the 6.1 after seeing some of the bbd posts:
this one first

then this one

You can't just "do" this, you should really research it all and completely understand the costs. It's expensive, don't fool yourself.

The above posts are geared towards the A body, so for your B body, just ignore (for the most part) the space limitations those guys have. Check out XV motorsports as well, as they have all sorts of stuff for these swaps.

The Keisler trans swap from auto to 5 speed if you want to so that as well, is $5500. I threw that in for you, since that's the coolest upgrade besides the 6.1 in my opinion. Too bad it's $5500...... but engineering knowledge is king.

Check this one out in the moparts tech archive:

oh, and I'm just a dreamer. I only own the alterK and the 6.1 is coming.....

Hi Darren,
It's not just knowledge, it the parts. Everything is going up in cost. Tremec raised prices Oct 1, 2008. etc etc

BUT, I have some good news. I recently completed reworking the bill of materials, and have reduced the price by several hundred dollars!

That is great news!
Any chance shipping is paid for as well ? When was that sale over?

It's nice to have you guys, don't get me wrong.

Thanks
Darren

Re: alterkation - 01/08/09 12:23 AM

thanks for the info - i'm hoping to reduce some cost by picking up a rollover with a 5.7 or 6.1 hemi in it and just megasquirting it. The reson I'm askin is i would like to do a build so i can have fun at the local autoX because whats the fun in having these cars and not driving them lol! weight is the biggest issue and so dropping in a alterkation will help reduce weight as well as gain a huge improvement on handling! Also dropping in a 5.7 with fuel injection will be ideal for what i want to do - thanks for the links - i'd be very interested in seeing your progress once you get the 6.1!

Re: alterkation - 01/08/09 02:13 PM

I bought a totalled 07 Charger R/T and am going to swap everything I can into a 70 GTX. I have an AlterKtion for it and a 4 link rear. I got slowed down by all the rust that was exposed when I stripped it so I am busy with body part replacement.
I am guessing that by next month we should be at a point where we can get to work on the suspension and motor/trans install. I am going to use the w5a580 auto trans from the Charger as well and I know there will be some "hump" mod involved, just not sure how much yet.
Here is a link to my photobucket space , you can see my progress so far.

That GTX didn't look all that bad (from the available shots) before you took it all apart.

That's significant sheet metal you're doing!

I'll be sure to keep watching.

Incidentally, what's the XV stuff worth and how is it for quality? What did you end up getting from them?

Thanks for posting.

Believe me, it was swiss Cheese. The only parts I have NOT had to change were.
rear frame rails
firewall (upper cowl replaced)
front cross rail frame member
floor from trunk pan to rear footwell
Roof
inner rocker panel

i have basialy built a new car.
I don't recall what the XV frame stiffening "package" cost, the price is on their web site. But I have installed the lower radiator support, which basially ties the front frame rails together under the radiator, the inner fender supports which go from the upper shock tower to the firewall, and will install the frame connectors as soon as I get the body stiff enough with the 1/4s and rockers to be able to flip it on the rotisserie. The quality of these parts is excellent. They fit right in as directed and I did not have to grind anything. The frame connectors I have not tried to fit yet but I expect there will be some minimal grinding at the least. They come pre-laser cut to conform to the floor pan so most of the hard work should be done.

looks good darius - looks like you could sell off the charger to offset some of the cost! will you be going with The Keisler 5-speed trans swap in the future? I'm hoping to catch a good deal on the engine so i can afford this swap,,,,

I will be installing the transmission that came with the Charger.
I got the ENTIRE car, which I started and drove on to the trailer, on an auction at COPART. This is a site/business that primarily liquidates insurance totalled vehicles. They do consignments and other types of sales also. You have to prove you are a business with resale license to get registered to bid at their online auctions.
I paid only $6700.00 for the whole car!
I expect I'll get at least a couple of thousand back once I part it out.
