Where to purchase fasteners for your Mopar Resto?

Where to purchase fasteners for your Mopar Resto? - 11/21/14 12:39 AM

I'm just trying to see where everyone is purchasing fasteners, nuts, clips etc... for their Mopar restoration. I want to see who has quality parts, period correct identification at a reasonable cost.

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

I have never bought original hardware, I always got it from parts cars if I didn't save or have the originals.

RT specialties can supply you or send you to the right source.

It'd be cheaper and better to buy a parts car IMO if you have room.

I used kits from Mr G a few years ago and well satisfied. Mr G also did repair/resto on all my dash plastic bits.

If you are performing an O.E. level restoration you will need original fasteners from a car, and not only that, from a car that came from the same plant, and was built around the same time as your car if you want to get as close to correct as possible.

AMK is a good vendor and they sell SOME of the factory style fasteners for SOME applications, but they, just like all of the other "new" fastener vendors, are a bit generic when it comes to specific applications. If you want convenience and new fasteners that are "close" to correct, AMK is the best I know of.

Most everyone in the business buys their bolts from AMK then mark them up for resale. Auveco is the other source for OEM type hardware.

Both of these vendors are more wholesale than retail. I buy from both of them but I have a customer account and I order 1000 bolts at a time. Don't count on calling them and asking for a muffler bolt for a '69 Valiant and getting a response!

Example:

The following pics are of exhaust manifold bolts for a survivor 1971 340 engine, never apart. BOTH style bolts you see came on this engine, one I call a "Dogbone" head marking, the other being an "M" head. If you buy AMK replacements which are sold as "Factory correct" by most sellers, all of the bolt head markings will be the same, and they will have an "H" on the heads (some Mopar exhaust manifolds DID have "H" head bolts, just not MY example). So, for the 340 I have, they'd be incorrect, but they are dimensionally correct and would work.

Here's an original Carburetor hold down bolt (1971 340, Thermo-Quad). Never off the engine. Ask AMD for one of these and you'll get a bolt with an "H" head marking.

This engine has fastener details I've seen on a number of other 71 340's it's not an anomaly. I've NEVER seen one (known original) example of a 71 340 with the "H" bolts on the carbs OR the exhaust manifolds yet many sellers of reproduction hardware sell the "H" heads as "correct" for this application, likely because it's all they have.

Have your original hardware replated. Only replace the fasteners that are too pitted to use.

Re: Where to purchase fasteners for your Mopar Resto? - 11/22/14 01:28 AM

The head markings are the copyrights of the original bolt mfgs. AMK has bought up a bunch of copyrights over the years but they haven't been able to buy them all. So they only offer a few of the head marks.

If you really need a special head marking and are willing to pay for it you can talk to AMK about running bolts for you with the special head marking. It will cost a fortune if it is possible. The odds are that it won't even be possible since the copyright might not be available.

Re: Where to purchase fasteners for your Mopar Resto? - 11/22/14 10:43 AM

AMK is by far the best source there is out there, but even so, on my car only about 25% of the bolts (without captive washers) and machine screws (with captive washers) appear in their catalog with all the exact same attributes such as head marking and captive washer diameter.

I did use their excellent catalog with photos of each of their items as a base line for listing all my fasteners, saving me from making photos in most cases. The reason I made a list is so the fasteners can be bulk re-plated and then put back where they came from.

For a nuts and bolts restoration, in many cases, but not all, you can use generic nuts, washers, and tapping screws because the originals were generic. It's mostly just the head markings of bolts and machine screws that are an issue.

Being knowledgeable about AMK's website and listings has been a big help.

Re: Where to purchase fasteners for your Mopar Resto? - 11/22/14 03:34 PM

For a company ( AMK as an example ) to re-produce every example of each different bolt head marking on each and ever bolt size / dimension. Would be economic suicide .

I can think of at least 5 or 6 different head markings on the underhood electrical fastener alone. Another one would be at least a half dozen different valve cover bolts.
They did the right thing,, pick one maybe 2 in some examples and go with it.

I for one and dmmm glad they've stepped up and have done what they've done

Ps, I asked about having a particular bolt made. The quanities to do so are in the tens of thousands , deeply.

For example, I'm looking for the crank shaft damper bolt for my 440 engine. AMK has one with a triangle as depicted on the bolt head. I thought it should have an M or Le? Thoughts?

Re: Where to purchase fasteners for your Mopar Resto? - 11/23/14 01:01 AM

A couple of dampner bolts I have, have LE raised on them. I have two grade 8 bolts with a triangle on them as yours, but they are aftermarket and are also smaller than the 1 1/4 head size that stock is. Good luck in your search. I don't think most folks realize how hard it can be finding the right appearing bolts, especially ones that show.

You can catch him in early morning by phone usually (Eastern Time). The best way to be hassle free is just order online and it arrives a few days later.

Once you attach the crankshaft pulley, won't the dampener bolt head be completely out of sight? For bolts that are unseen, I say cheat and use a non Mopar.

This photo is a 340, not a 440, but it's impossible to see the crank bolt without a long handled mirror and flashlight. Maybe not even with mirror and light.

Understood. Post your questions, and I'll bet the forum will help.

I'll be pulling my crank bolt soon, and then I'll know the full details. It's a 340 but may be the same as BB.

Re: Where to purchase fasteners for your Mopar Resto? - 11/24/14 08:58 PM

I'm being told the crankshaft damper bolt that AMK is currently offering with the triangle on the bolt head is not correct. Attached is a photo of the crankshaft damper bolt from my father's 1970 Dodge Coronet R/T (440). It's a little tough to make it out, since the bolt head still retains some paint and it was exposed to elements for the first 10-years of it's like. Does anyone re-manufacturer the LE bolt.

What AMK offers is on page 198 here:

http://www.amkproducts.com/Catalog_PDF/196-201.pdf

Says C-8204 crankshaft damper for 383/440 and C-8059 crankshaft damper for SB & 426 Hemi, includes 1 hex bolt and 1 flat washer, 1964-1974, $8 each, with no description of size nor head markings.

So now we know 383 and 440 are the same and SB and 426 are the same, and, as posted, the C-8204 has a triangle on the head and not an LE.

As mentioned above, the bolt might have the correct head marking only for certain models, years, or plants and not others. If you just want the right size, thread, and material spec, these bolts should work.

Minimum order is $30.
