small block 727 - 11/14/14 06:18 AM

I have a 360 w/trans that a fellow is interested in buying. I was told the combo was previously used in a b series van. This fellow wants to use it in a '66 Baracuda. Our concern is; will the trans fit? I know the 360 will fit in place of the current 318 he says is in the car. He thought the tailshaft might be too long for the car. Are there different length tail shafts for a van/truck versus car applications? Thanks for all the help.

if it is a std 727 with the long car tailshaft it will fit. The dimentions are (I believe) in the archives here

You need to look at the tail shaft, too. If the 66 Barracuda is a floor shift, then the tail shaft of the 727 needs to have two mounting holes on the bottom side up close to the cross member mount. That is where the bracket goes to secure the bottom bracket for the floor shifter.

The only differences in 727 tail shaft lengths that I have found have involved 4 wheel drive transmissions. If the van was a 2wd I'd check for the two holes previously mentioned for the floor shifter mount ( can't remember if those were utilized in 66?) and go.

Doesn't have the two mounting holes. The guy already has a tranny in the car. Push come to shove, the guy can work out the tailshaft issues afterwards. Thanks guys for the info. BTW, here's my latest project. /6 w 3 on tree. Gonna swap to auto tranny. Thinking of an Offenhauser 2-1bbl manifold and bumping the cam a little. Truck is really clean and a blast to drive. Gets a lot of thumbs up and others scratching their heads.

the torque shaft for his 904 will not fit the 727 properly.A 727 is wider and the torque shaft used on 727's in an A body is about 1" shorter than the 904
..the frame and trans brackets are slightly different as well.

IIRC the driveshaft slip yoke is different between the 904 and 727, but it has been since 1979 when I last cared about a 904
