Hurst Super Shifter 3...???

Hurst Super Shifter 3...??? - 11/13/14 01:02 PM

Bought one (and the kit) years and years ago and just recently sold the transmission i was going to put it on. Now i'm on the fence about selling it or keeping it for the next project. A guy came here and was telling me it was the greatest thing since the wheel... an awesome shifter. When i bought it i wanted the BEST shifter i could buy that accepted a pistol grip and required no cutting.

Any experience with this shifter?

Now that i'm thinking about selling it i checked out the usual suspects (Jegs, Summit), and found out its long disco'd. Checked E-bay and i see them for utterly ridiculous prices... WAY more than i paid ten or so years ago. I got mine for a wicked deal at the time, so i have no idea what they cost new.

How much were they new? Anyone remember?

I currently have one in my car along with my son. They are the same as a Comp. Plus shifter, except for the reverse lock out. Also, the lower arms are a tad longer allowing for a short shift pattern. It is a very good shifter and is no longer produced. Remans are available from time to time. Original cost, if I recall were around $250.00 +/-.

Just my two cent's : I ran an AAR Cuda with a super shifter mine may have been a little different as it was mounted on an inverted L shaped bracket which allowed for straight shift rod's and as far as I am concerned it was the best shifter available. If I were going back to a stick in my stocker which I may I would use one again Bob

Correct! Best 4 spd shifter ever made IMO.Problem is you have to modify the floor and the hump to use it as the shifter is located in the car and not under the floor.Tight fit with bench seat. Last I checked with Hurst it is still available but must be bought in pieces(rods,L bracket etc) ,not as a complete unit like the old days.Factory 71 up set up mimics the set up but is not as heavy duty.Big improvement over the comp plus and not the same unit.

Unless I'm missing something here, you guys are talking about a different shifter than the Super Shifter 3. I believe you're talking about the Ram Rod shifter. It had the same body as a Comp. Plus and Super Shifter, but was an "INLINE" shifter. In either case, floor mods weren't necessary if going into a stock stick floor pan.
All three used the same mounting pad. It is preferred to have all shifter rods as straight as possible. I'm using custom made(by me) straight rods with my Super Shifter 3 right now.

Not an inline shifter or a rachet shifter. H pattern with L bracket and longer, larger rods.Used by most of the early pro stock drivers when they used the Hemi 4 spd incl Sox,Landy etc etc.Ram rod came later. They called them Super Shifter 1,2,3, came later.

Ya got me there. I've seen the "L" shaped brackets used with "E" body cars and Comp Plus body shifters with and without the reverse lock out.

This is a Super Shifter III mounted with the Supershifter install kit. It did require butchering the floor. If you don't want to cut the floor then mount it on the standard Competition Plus bracket. They never made a kit like this for the E body because the shifter is already high and rearward. When I bought a SuperShifter for a Cuda back in the early 70's I called Hurst and asked why there was no listing for an E body kit and they said just buy the tower and a 7" straight handle, no need for a kit. The kit was for A and B body cars that had the forward mounting point.

Thanks. My day is complete. I learned something new.

Oh joy. More confusion.

Sooooo... the shifter i have, which is exactly as pictured here, WILL fit my 70 Challenger without cutting? or wont?

And also, is there any reason why these things are retarded prices on Ebay? Theres one, shifter only for $400. There's also a complete unit for $900, and another complete unit (though signed by someone famous, i forget) for $1300.

I think i paid $3-400 for mine.

I have a Super Shifter in my AAR right now. It is not the III like pictured, but the lockout is just pushing down for reverse. It came with the kit that included long, straight rods and a big "S" bracket that moved it up and over. It would have required me to cut the the hump more to use it. I did not want to do that. I just used the OEM rods and levers and it works great. Best shifter I've ever had. I has a shorter throw and is very positive. Every time I drive my buddy's 4 speed Superbird, I want to break into a round of " Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream"!

I have the same SuperShifter II as Fastmark in my Barracuda. Uses stock ebody rods, levers, mount and boot. No cutting what so ever.

Since you won't need the bracket and rods anyway you can buy one out of any car. Mine started life in a vette and cost me $125 on ebay. The vette bracket and rods are somewhere in my garage. Anybody want them?

Here's a picture of the E-body Supershifter III that I use in my Savoy.
It does not use the reverse lockout that most Supershifter units have and this is my second Supershifter that I have owned without the lockout. I really don't know when where or why they made them both ways but in either form they are a very nice H-pattern shifter
At a weekend race once with time trials I made 26 passes without missing a shift So once you get it setup right with good linkage it's hard to beat.

Here's a pic of that B-body adaptor kit that was used to move the shifter up and back. I think it was NOS and practicality gave it away for $250.00 years ago.

I ran a Hurst super shifter 3 on my 65 Olds 442. Very tight shifter. Those fat, straight rods really give you a positive feel. WAY tighter than a comp plus or stock pistol grip. You do have to cut the floor because the rods don't t have dog legs. Absolutely loved it and wish I'd never sold it. If I were building a 4 speed car I'd put one it it.

Re: Hurst Super Shifter 3...??? - 11/17/14 05:02 AM

Many years ago I grew tired of banging my knuckles on the dash of my '70 Roadrunner with that long pistol grip. Additionally, I always wanted a pistol grip equipped '70 'Cuda, but until I can marry a wealthy Mopar friendly woman, the prices are too unfriendly to me. Here's what I did... I bought a Super Shifter 3, and swapped out the 3 shifting levers for the even longer levers from the Roadrunner's pistol grip, and then bolted on a pistol grip handle from a 'Cuda to possibly produce the shortest throw Hurst shifter ever! It worked great, and other than the reverse lock-out, I did not see any special parts inside the Super Shifter 3. The large "L" bracket supplied put the pistol grip in an E-body location, so I was happy and contented. (Until the 426 Hemi bug bit me!)

Gus, is that a bracket and shift rods you made? Did you have to cut the floor?

So from the sounds of it they shift significantly better than the comp plus?

Re: Hurst Super Shifter 3...??? - 11/19/14 04:39 AM

The bracket is from Hurst and the rods are made by me with heim joints and tubing I purchased from Liberty gears. It's not really easy making the heim joint linkage but it is rewarding and easier to adjust without messing with those spring clips. You also need to buy a left hand 3/8 24 tap

Which bracket did you use?

What about the mechanism is different than the comp plus?

I used the bracket that is attached to the shifter in the picture. It bolts directly to the mounting bosses on the end of the tail extension housing. I never really compared the two shifters side by side Talk to Jamie Passon about the difference between the two shifters as he rebuilds them and would know.

I guess I meant is that the same bracket as for the comp plus?

Re: Hurst Super Shifter 3...??? - 11/21/14 01:55 AM

The steel mounting bracket moves the shifter up and over to your leg where it feels natural. A Competition Plus will bolt up to the steel bracket because the bolt pattern is the same.

Re: Hurst Super Shifter 3...??? - 11/22/14 03:56 AM

Back in the early 70's I bought a original super shifter after going to one of Dick Landy's clinics that he had at a local dodge dealership. At that time he had a super shifter in the challenger that he brought to show. I had a 68 roadrunner that was a street/strip car. The next day I ordered the shifter. It came with the L bracket that raised and set back the shifter into the car, major cutting was required. The shifter did not come with a reverse lock out, that came later , it was just a side plate that you could move up and down with a piece of threaded rod and a red round ball on it . After the roadrunner I put the shifter in a 63, 64, plymouth and then the 67 barracuda. I don't remember using the L bracket in the 63, 64 but the barracuda did not need it. Some cutting was required on the crossmember and floor towards the back of the original shifter hole. The proper shift bracket was needed to rotate the shifter to work.

I thought the super shifter 3 was great just like you guys. And then I tried a Long shifter. The difference is night and day. I will never go back to a Hurst.

Re: Hurst Super Shifter 3...??? - 11/22/14 09:27 PM

I have run a super shifter III for 30 years in my 70 roadrunner. It does use the bracket that moves the shifter up and back. The shifter sits inside the car above the cross member. I removed the factory shifter hump and made my own. I think it's the best H pattern shifter ever made. [image]100_0081[/image]
